Wednesday Walk - Gazeley to Moulton 🐎steemCreated with Sketch.

in #wednesdaywalk5 years ago (edited)

I've seen a lot of 'Wednesday walks' since I took to Steem and they are great to read. I like the incentives that are out there on the Steem platform and this is my first #WednesdayWalk (inspired by @tatoodjay). This is a trip I took from the village of Gazeley to the (fairly) famous village of Moulton in Suffolk, with my partner.

We got a house sit in Gazeley (looking after a gorgeous cat called Bessie), and this is what led us to be in this fine part of the British countryside. Gazeley is a typical, small picturesque kind of English village, with old houses, a main road with an old church and a pub on it. Strangely there were lots of Americans living in the area too! Our journey was from the Church that forms part of the '3 churches walk', as the locals put it. But to be honest we only wanted to do one third of it...

Setting off down the country path through the studs towards Moutlton

We set off down this lovely shaded path that goes between two large horse studs. The whole of this area is renowned for its long tradition of husbandry practices, owing to Newmarket to the west. Newmarket has a famous race course and is home to the Godolphin Stables - that's some big-money Arab horse husbandry. There is a lot of money in horses, and in the UK, it is mostly here! We walked for a good 30 minutes along arable fields and the sunshine was just fantastic. It feels like summer has truly landed and that its going to be a good one :)

Passing through the farmers fields

Diverting from the edges of the fields the path led right through a field of waist high green crop - no idea what it is. A well defined path it is and it had two strange piles of flint (see image below). Any idea why this is done? Maybe its an English version of Zen Rocks... The soil round here must be a bugger for ploughing because of this stuff.

Flint piles - but why?

As we started to enter Moulton we got to a classic countryside stile, with a door for a dog! How very British.

A stile to Moulton Church

The stile led down a small hill to Church number 2 at Moulton. The war graves were quite prominent here and a Geocache was had! (see images below)

The village of Moulton

The village of Moulton is PRETTY. First of all we found a stream full of ducklings, which kept me busy quite a while. On the breeze we could also hear a football match. The houses/cottages all around are well spaced and some looked so OLD, with lots of thatched roofs. It really is a pleasant place, not one that wants some loud ass drone hovering around I suppose... With our tummies rumbling we checked out The Packhorse Inn. I'd been told that it was 'expensive and full of jockeys'. Turned out that day it was just expensive and there wasn't a diminutive jockey in sight. Maybe next time i'll meet Frankie Dettori in there... He seems like a fun chap. The chips were good, cooked in duck fat which is a first. After lunch we went to see the strange old bridge next door (see image above). It turns out it is over 500 years old and was built to facilitate trade between Cambridge and Bury St. Edmunds. I was informed that the river here used to burst its banks frequently in the old days of horse and cart and was quite perilous. It was a real lifeline back then.

After spending some time relaxing on the village green it was time to go back to Gazeley, which took about a hour. During the walk we met a local at the top of the hill and I asked if it was Ely Catherdral I could see in the distance (it was a real tiny grey speck, about 40 or so miles away at a guess). I was then informed 'ahhh yes, but of course, that is why the village ahead is called Gaze-Eley!' (Gazeley - get it?!). Well sometimes things just fall into place! I couldn't believe it was possible to see from this distance. Haha!

Quick droning session on the way back

As I carry the drone most places I go, it wouldn't be right not to get it out and this was a quiet place just on from our meeting with the local, and incidentally the field we passed through before. I wanted to get some nice field fly overs and take some pictures of the public thoroughfare, for my stock photo collection. See the image below how smoothly the path cuts across the land. We really are privileged to have these public rights of way through through land in the UK. Thank you for the Public Rights of Way Act. What do you think of the drone shot below?

Cut across the land

It's nice to share walks and hikes with everyone out there. In future I'll try and get a big Wednesday walk in that has more drone in it 😃

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE BRITISH SUMMER

Such an interesting walk and a beautiful day I have no idea why that flint would be there like that on the path
And back home in NZ I have come across many stiles but never one with a dog door that’s novel

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :)

Thanks @tattoodjay! It was a stunner of a day. Well people here in England are dog crazy, so it doesn't surprise me! Good to be part of the club :)

On my visits there especially out inthe rural areas i did notice so many dogs so it does make sense to have the doggy door

Nice pictures from your walk.

In the US I see piles of rocks (cairns) fairly regularly. Sometimes they are used to denote the path to follow. Sometimes they are just hikers having fun and adding to the pile started by others before them.

Ahh that must be it and then people (including me) felt the need to add more :) tha ks for stopping by the post!
