Climate Tipping Point of interest to anyone.

in #weather8 years ago (edited)

Wow, just watch this...

This is one of the many tipping points climate scientists are concerned about.

When we go beyond just simple things like above average temperatures etc. and we start to see things happening in places they are not supposed to, with staggering knock on effects.

The video below shows was happened the previous northern hemisphere winter (2015) in the Arctic.

What is of much concern is that this is a potential tipping point.

Arctic winter Sea ice has been growing slower than average for a while now but when we not only see sea ice growth stopping but actually retreating during winter that is a very worrying precedent especially if it becomes a trend.

As storms managed to reach far further north than usual with worrying effects on the ice growth and resulting in record low levels of sea ice last year.

Sea ice has reflective properties and the sea ice that grows in the arctic winter, reflects a lot of sunlight, while it shrinks in the summer keeping the Arctic Ocean cooler.

With less and less sea ice there is less and less reflection and more of that sunlight ends up being absorbed and heating the arctic sea.

Warmer arctic seas are particularly troublesome in that methane that is trapped under the sea is now being released and bubbling to the surface.

Methane is much more potent than CO2 in capturing heat from the sun.

If we lose a substantial portion of the arctic polar ice cap we will be in for some truly challenging changes in sea currents and weather patterns globally.

This is not without precedent and the geological record documents times when the arctic was free of ice about 100 to 120 thousand years ago. However we are not supposed to be there now and aproaching these conditions at such a rapid rate.

Sort:

Don't worry, we are heading into a mini-ice-age.

The planet cycles like this. Its like breathing for the oceans.
For the ice-age to start, the temperature has to go up for a bit, before it falls.

And mankind's CO2 has nothing to do with this. Al Gore, in the movie, An Inconvenient Truth proved that CO2 is a following indicator of temperature.

Im agree with you but just want to make a small correction if possible, I think Al Gore did not prove anything ;) he is not a scientist...

When Al Gore said, "Don't they look like they go together?" Everyone in the audience should have said, "Lets put them together and find out".

Since a scientist would put them together and find out, then Al Gore is either (A) not a scientist or (B) he is lying. (or both). I assume he has enough science background to plot 2 sets of data on a graph. (my assumption may be wrong) Therefore, Al Gore knew the data didn't support his statement, and so used a fallacy of leading example. (He never actually said they go together)

Therefore, Al Gore knew the data didn't support his statement, and so used a fallacy of leading example.

Yes, he knew he was wrong... first temp go up and therefore there is more CO2 but not the oposite... and that was his afirmation

it makes my head hurt. ANd doesn't help that the new admin is considering the climate-denier for the EPA :-(

It's of grave concern to me ... don't expect much interest in this subject in the coming years though :(

Nothing will happen until it's to late.
Economics, greed and corruption is whats preventing change.

Let's hope China keep to it's plans. The Chinese people has really shown their discontent these last years, so it is a domestic political concern to the Chinese government. Centralised spending on infrastructure is also something that drives innovation so in the end the Trump administration might simply buy into some of it simply because clean energy sources are cheaper... Coal energy is already more expensive than sun-energy, so Trumps promise to the northern coal districts will not be happening.

That is in the Arctic... and what happen in the Antarctic? A friend told me that when one reduce the other grow... Is this true? Im not saying it is true or not, Im just asking. Thanks a lot for any answer

I think we forget that nature tend to make a balance like all the living unities do. When is winter in one part of the globe is summer in the other, and so on. You can call it cicles of the nature or whatever you want, for me is more a kind of balance. Is really interesting how all this about climate change is around the Arctic... and what happen in te other part of the planet? Why nobody talk about it and always tend to show only one part of the system we are living?

I'm in the South and or weather is an absolute mess these days, rain and tornadoes in winter in areas that are summer only rainfall areas.

No rain for many months when it should be raining and then a years worth of rain in one week...

Here in the north is normal autumn, raining a lot and cold. Nothing so different as how it should be.
