Visiting Noccalula Falls, 3rd glimpse
Where do you go on vacation?
Last summer, while vacationing in Alabama, I took my family to Noccalula Falls.
Up at street level, a large, pretty park — with a small zoo, gardens, and other attractions — is threaded by a narrow-gauge railway. Visitors are carted around by a train that stops at a small platform. From there a footpath descends into the Black Creek Gorge, where it joins a trail system. In the heat of summer, the gorge is the place to be, kept cool by breeze, shade, and the evaporative effect of roaring waterfall spray. The main path is an easy hike straight to the falls.
Above, my wife reclines on a rock, facing the waterfall, right about where the trail goes under its giant overhanging ledge. Behind where I stand, snapping her photo with my iPhone, is a vast walkable space under the ledge, extending behind the falls.
This darker view shows a hint of droplet detail in the falling water, and a hint of surface turbulence in the impact zone beneath. To our eyes while there, the setting wasn’t really dark. I had to trick the phone’s camera to obtain such a view.
Above, the oldest of our children snaps her own waterfall photos. Below, she photographs my sister, my son, and me.
more on the way
I hope you like this post. It’s third in a series. Part one is here. The second installment is here. More glimpses of our family’s visit to Noccalula Falls are yet to come. Here, for instance, is part four.
