King of the sky: F-14 Tomcat
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat
Maybe it was Top Gun, maybe its the sure beauty of these planes, i dont know. To me the F-14 Tomcat remains the king of the sky. The F-14 Tomcat made its maiden flight nearly 47 years ago, on December 21, 1970. It was the United States heaviest and largest fighter jet to live and be able to launch from aircraft carriers. The Tomcats wings can adjust to 75 degrees to save space on aircraft carriers.
The Tomcat was incredibly flexible. Not only was it the Navies main air superiority fighter and fleet defense interceptor, it was also used for reconnaissance. That is a lot of roles for one plane.
Armed with the most powerful radar of its time (Able to track 24 targets at any given time) it was a power house when it came to armory. It was able to carry the AIMG-54 Phoenix missile and was able to carry 6 of the 1000 pound missiles at once.
Currently the only country still operating with the F-14 Tomcat is Iran, they acquired them in 1976 when The United States and Iran had positive relations.
The last recorded mission with the Tomcat was in 2006 but, the Tomcat still remains one the most fastest and impressive fighter jets ever produced.
Thank you Grumman for making my childhood a rememberable one.
