Oslo - Ammerud + Lillomarka - still winter, still no snowsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #walkwithme6 years ago (edited)

I'm quite happy I managed to get my middle son with me for a walk in our local area this Sunday, of course he rather wanted to sit at home and play computer games - but I believe it's very bad for health to just stay indoors with computer games all day.

We're living in the eastern suburbs of Oslo - that was almost out of necessarity, we couldn't afford a house on the west side of Oslo. Before the 60s this was mostly farmland - there were two greater farms in this area, it was Ammerud farm and Grorud farm. During the 60s several metro lines were built, and lots of farmland was converted into residental areas. Today Ammerud and Grorud are two suburban residental areas as well as two metro stops at the Grorudbanen metro line. The photo below is taken from the upper Grorud area, but the apartment buildings that can be seen is in the Ammerud area. There are quite many different kind of houses in Ammerud, but of course from the distance the highest apartment buildings are most visible.

The skiing bridge below is new, I've never seen it before, and I was a bit surprised to find it. Lillomarka Arena is an old quarry turned into a sports center, mostly for cross-country skiing competitions, now they also have asphalted tracks for roller-skis in the summer time.

This sign post seems to have been forgotten. It says the works will be finished in 2017 and (if I read it correctly) that it's needed to do detours if going along the path that goes right by the arena.

Ammerud, and the apartment buildings. The apartment buildings in the far distance to the left is probably a part of Linderud residental areas.

"axissnowtower" - the machine that has created the heap of artificial snow. There is something greyish in the background - that's part of the quarry that is still operative.

Into the forest, by a small crossroad. Areas that are exposed for the open sky lose heat during starry nights due to outbound heat radiation, there isn't much hoar here in the "shade" of the pine trees.

Steinbruvann - a lake I've covered in earlier swimming, biking and skiing posts. Those lines are naturally occurring, they are not the result of manmade activity, but simply due to cracks in the ice.

We just had to play a bit on the ice, didn't we? This lake is dammed, before it was dammed the road was going right here, hence it's a shallow area - if the ice would break we'd just get a bit wet on our feet.

The ice isn't quite safe.

Though, I was repeatedly jumping up and down, eventually I realised I would not be able to make a hole in the ice. I did make some hefty cracks though. I deem the probability of falling through the ice to be less than 50% if skating on the lake. Some few more days with low temperatures, and it should be safe to go skating.

Water can escape from the lake through this overflow channel. This summer was excessively dry, during the summer time this overflow channel was completely dry, and at least half a metre above the watershed. The lake was earlier used as drinking water, but nowadays the water is not used for anything.

Is it possible to pass without getting wet on the feet? Apparently, yes!

There seems to be one more outlet for the water here

A bit of water coming through that outlet, but most floating above the overflow channel.

Those lakes and forests belongs to the Oslo municipality now, but earlier it was Aker. Aker was a municipality surrounding Oslo, today it's all a part of Oslo.

Down to the civilization again, Ammerud appartment buildings to the right. I've been walking here many times, but only today I noticed that there actually is some view of the other side of the bigger valley from here.

Oh, on the subject of apartment buildings on the eastern side of Oslo, they're featured in this music video as well:

When snow sir?
I can't say that I don't like the pics you shared this weekend with the frost and also a bit of sun from over there but where's that Norwegian snow? I would love to see some. @digitree also shared some pics from around Oslo but still...just ice.
By the way, it was on Norway where I had the guts to walk on an icy lake for the first time in my entire life. The Danube was in here also frozen multiple times but didn't had the courage to walk on it. There there were some kids skating and one guy even riding the bike on the lake so I thought what the heck, if they can then I can do it also...

According to the current forecast it will start raining on Thursday.

Snow that comes and stays usually comes only after new year, and it varies a lot from year to year. It's also much less snow in an average winter in Oslo than in Tromsø. Due to the greenhouse effect the snow generally comes later now than some decades ago, but the variations are also bigger now than some decades ago.

Clouds are reflecting the radiated heat from the ground, so cold temperatures often go hand in hand with no clouds, and without clouds there won't be any proper snow ...

Perhaps we can go skating on the lake on Wednesday ... maybe, maybe ...

It’s great to have fun and outing with the kids during weekends. I also try to do this whenever get time. We were grown up in rural areas during our age and enjoyed the beauty of nature always. But unfortunately our kids are growing up with all the artificial things around and have less contact with nature due to living in urban area. However, nice photography.

Thank you for an interesting and exciting photo walk.
And I would not dare to walk on the still weak ice, especially to allow
my son to step on the ice.
It's dangerous. But you know better, you tried it. I'm still scared :- )

Very beautiful nature in Norway. And we do not have snow almost until January.
And if it falls, it immediately melts.

And this song is for you )

I was particularly choosing this point of the lake as I knew it was very shallow here. Falling through would mean wet ice-cold shoes, which would be quite bad, but not dangerous. I would most likely have opted for taxi home (or asked someone for a lift). We would for sure have learned a lesson :-) And, even if my son would have walked a bit too far out and then gone through, I would still be able to save him.

Later I've checked up some few things regarding ice conditions - I found two very useful resources out on the web (both in Norwegian) - the "ice school" and the "Ice Map" - so now I've been reading a lot of useful information on ice conditions, both on the sea and on lakes, as well as how to learn if the ice is safe, special conditions to be aware of, and what kind of security gear one should have when skating on the ice.

Wednesday there was at least one report about safe ice in our neighbourhood, and it would have been a perfect day for skating, but unfortunately it's already getting dark when I'm done at work, so not the best ... and then it started raining.

Thank you for your interesting detailed answer.

I'm just a big coward and very afraid to walk on ice ))
