WalkWithMe in a Carlswald garden - City of Johannesburg

We took a road trip over the weekend to Johannesburg to celebrate our son and his girlfriend's birthdays.
Jozi or Joburg as its affectionately known, conjures up images of a city of mine dumps and skyscrapers, but surprisingly is also known as the garden city of South Africa.
Amidst the squalor of downtown Jozi, one sees signs of faded grandeur in the tree-lines streets.
Our drive took us just north of the city, where our son lives in Carlswald, a place of tranquility close to the once famous Kyalami Race Track.
We arrived at dusk and all the stress of the busy roads immediately fell away when we were greeted by this tranquil sight.

We woke up the following morning to the sound of birds and the neighbour's fowls.
This little fella came running past and looking at the size of him, I was quite relieved when he ran back to his owner.

Walking through this sprawling property,
one cannot believe you're just minutes away from the city.

An Oxtail Potjie prepared by our son.
('potjie' direct translation from Afrikaans is 'small pot')
However, these black cast iron pots generally are large pots and are used to cook a special kind of stew filled with meat, fresh veggies and secret herbs and spices, then cooked for several hours over the coals of a barbeque or Braai as we call it in South Africa.
This is our menfolk's specialty, a beer in the hand a necessity throughout the process :)
Everyone has their secret ingredient and boast about why their potjie tastes better than the next one.
Of course the womenfolk encourage this competitive streak as it's their night off from the kitchen :)
Many potjie competitions are run all over South Africa, often in aid of charity.

I do hope you enjoyed walking through this lovely garden, would have loved to give you all a taste of the Oxtail Potjie, but that walk certainly stimulated our appetite and all that was left was a few spoons full of gravy.
