World Heritage Site- Avebury Stone Circle
Today Im visiting a very beautiful village in Wiltshire called Avebury, its is a short walking distance from silbury hill and also from west kennet long barrow, and just downhill from the great Ridgeway path.
The village is famous for it being built in the middle of the largest Megalithic stone circle in the World, its so huge theirs a road running straight through the middle of it!
Its actually three huge stone circles, that had 100 stones originally surrounding the two smaller rings. It has a huge cucular ditch surrounding the outside and a very high bank.
The whole area covers over 28 acres and altogether with all the huge stones and high banks represented hundreds of thousands of hours work for many people, one simply cannot imagine how, or why it was made.

You are lucky to visit this my friend. I saw this on a documentary a while back, very intriguing to me. What was their reason for all this work, it couldn't have been easy! Perhaps it serves a real purpose, it may be a burial site?
That hill with the trees in the last pic looks like it could be a burial mound.
Your right there @darkpurplelight theirs a few around there. A peaceful spot it was 😊
