In our society today, we have some people we entrust some of our roles and responsibilities in their hands to discharge it for us. Our society today is made up of leaders to face the world on our behave and to lead us right. The status giving to such person is regarded to as leadership.

Accountability

In a nutshell, accountability simply means giving account or record of something. There is need to give account to know how far and how well. According to Merriam-webster dictionary defines it as

The quality or state of being accountable; especially : an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions

Leadership And Accountability

There are some leaders in our society that doesn't give account of how they run their office and it is not like they don't want to but tradition did not support the idea. For example, the kings and queens. In Yoruba tribe, we called them "Kabiesi" which simply means no one dare to ask or question their authority. Whatever they do, or they say is the final while on the other side, there are some leaders we refers to as "Excellency" and this type of leaders are expected to give account of how far and how well they have run the office entrusted them with and under this category we have the President and Governors.

Giving account of the first tenure may go a long way in choosing them again or replacing them. Focus here will be on the Excellency type of leadership which can also be refers to as democratic system of leadership or leader by the people and for the people.

Leadership Role

Part of the aims of education is to build a just and egalitarian society and to provide a land of bright and full of opportunities for all citizens. These we can only achieve through a good leadership where everyone we have equal right to the national cake and where there will be many opportunities for the citizens of the society. But it is quite unfortunate that these seems to be unachieveable and it is as a result of bad leadership. Some of the things expected from our leaders goes thus;

• Provision of good roads.
• provision of good water.
• provision of stable electricity.
• provision of sustainable job for the graduates.

All these has always be a born of contention after their time in office, yet, there is always a budget for all these but it is the same problem we keep battling with in our society

Why There Is Need For Accountability

Only God knows what our society will have turn to today if there is nothing like giving account. No matter how powerful and self centered you are during your time in office, after the four years, you have to give account of how you have spend the money in your power.

Different parties with different philosophy and ideology and different type of promises during manifesto, but it is the same old stories of fighting corruption and insecurity in the society. We have seen cases whereby People in power will be giving money to carry out a particular project and they will see it as an opportunity to fill their own account forgetting the fact that they will have to give account.

Reason why there is need for accountability is to know which leader has done well and the one that has done bad. History will always remember and in some cases history don't forgive. There are some leaders in the society today that when you speak about them, people around will always have something good to say about them while history will never forgive some.
