Virtual Reality (VR) games and experiences are not only fun to play and try, they can also be interesting for some people from the other side - how they are being created. There are number of platforms that support VR, though there are pretty much 4 major ones - Oculus Rift and HTC Vive for PC and Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard for mobile devices. They all share a lot of similarities, though there are also some differences that are specific for each and every one of them. So before you want to start learning how to develop you need to focus on one of the platforms and start with it and then it will be much easier to expand to others as well with some of the basic VR knowledge already covered.

There are a lot of places to help you get started, and even if you do not plan to be a developer, you still might be interested in how everything is being created and works for Virtual Reality. One such place is the VR Dev School it is a website that offers Virtual Reality Developer Training via a series of FREE courses that cover the basics for all of the major VR platforms mentioned above already, so it is a great starting point. The best of all is that most of the available (not that many yet) courses are available free of charge, so you just need to go through a quick and simple registration in order to get access to them.

Currently the VR Dev School has 5 different online courses, one Mini course for each of the four major platforms - Oculus Rift, Cardboard, Vice and Gear VR and the fifth available course is a paid one. The Become a VR Developer with Unity 3D if a full-fledged course for developing with the Unity 3D software and costs $297 USD. It is still a work in progress apparently as some parts of it are still being worked on, but it is a multiple hour that promises you to be able to learn how to create amazing VR experiences for the HTC Vive and Oculus Touch after you go through the complete course. This one is for people that are seriously interested in getting started into developing for VR, you can just go through the free mini courses to get to know the different platforms and basics and specifics for each one of them.

The course goes with a simple and easy user interface where you see all of the parts of the whole thing with their duration, it is mostly video though, so you can go through them in parts easily if you do not have the time to go from start to finish in one go. The course videos use a custom video player that can be either Flash-based or HTML5-based, you cans switch what you use from the settings of the website and you can also vary the playback speed if you want to go faster through something that you already watched for example. The average time you will need for the mini courses available for free should be about an hour and a half to two hours, though it can easily take you more time.

If you are interested in VR and VR development and how things work, even if not wanting to become a VR developer, these free VR courses can still be a good first step into getting started and learning more about how things with the current VR technology work and how the VR software is being developed. No need to have prior programming background or experience, though having such can be helpful as usual.
