The Do’s and Don’ts of asking for votes

WHEN IS IT OK TO ASK FOR A VOTE OR SELF-PROMOTE:

  • At the end of your own post--the readers came to see you. Encourage them to see more!
  • If you are already in a dialogue about a subject you feel you have covered well and it appears there is a window for you to share because you think it will benefit the conversation, not because it will get you votes.
  • If you have been very generous with your comments, votes, and resteems on a particular post, and you feel they might appreciate your work because it is in a similar vein (they may reciprocate as well)
  • If someone expressly asks for advice on a subject you feel you have covered well.
  • You have already established some rapport with another blogger you admire, and you would like their support on something you think deserves a look. This obviously must be done sparingly, or you’ll wear out your welcome.

WHEN IS IT NOT OK TO ASK FOR A VOTE OR SELF-PROMOTE:

  • When you’re a bot
  • When you’re arbitrarily clicking on posts, not reading them, and leaving copy/paste “vote for me” in the comments at random. This is tacky, immature, and lazy. And you won’t get anywhere with it. So stop it. For the love.
  • When you comment on a post and out-the-gate draw attention to something YOU posted. This is tacky, desperate, upstaging and supremely annoying. You wouldn’t upstage people in real life, would you? So don’t do it here.
  • When you transfer a fraction of a percentage of SBD into someone’s wallet so they’ll notice you in their transactions, and you put “vote for this post” in the memo. This is a cry for help, and will be seen as such. You might as well be a telemarketer.
** The only time this would even remotely be OK would be as an advertisement for a service you can offer the person. And even then, be wise, and offer a really good product, or you will get voted off the island fast.

Leave your comments below! And be sure to resteem, upvote, and follow my content! (see how I did that there?)

Tbh (and this is only my opinion), asking for votes shouldn't be allowed at all regardless of whether it's at the bottom of the post or not. Maybe it's just what I think but I feel like if people genuinely like your posts, they will upvote regardless of whether you ask them to or not.

You make a good point. I'm of the same mind. I feel awkward when doing it, and feel the post should speak for itself. If I want to vote for you, it's not going to be because you asked me to. However, if you shared a post for me to see, and I felt it was warranted, I might vote in that instance. I don't think I've ever voted just because someone asked me to. I think we owe it to the platform to vote authentically. Then again...I'm totally on the steem chain and vote automatically under someone else's name.... so there goes that argument. Then again, I trust his judgement. So nevermind.

I don't think I've ever asked I know some do but it doesn't sit right with me

Just FYI:

Don't waste your money on these resteeming "services." Their followers aren't worth the 1.5 SBD. They're pretty much just scams that don't actually get your posts in front of more people. And most of the promised upvotes are from alt accounts with no power.

Besides...I got you covered anyway!

Kind of noticed that with the resteeming "service". Just wanted to give it a try. Also, kind of noticed you got me covered. You're a hellofa peach. Hopefully I'll make it worth your while, ats-david. I wish I would have been able to stay active all those months when I was away. Sigh. But now back to having a blast and fully in it to win it.

nice post upvoted your vote is important for me @deshwal

Hey, you should read the above post. :0)

I HAD to LOLIRL at this one! oh my, the irony... I just stopped by because you had recently upvoted a post of mine, glad I did! If you have just a second of your time, Above ^^^ you had replied to someone and mentioned a steem chain. I am fairly new to this, but very much wanting to get involved with the community. Can you elaborate?

You just go to streemian.com. It's an app designed for people who don't always have the time to make quality votes on quality posts. You pick someone to sign under and their votes will count as yours. I don't remember how to sign up, but you should never give out your password. So I think there is a way around this, like with the posting key. If they have to take your password, and you wanna sign up, I guess just change it immediately after in "settings." I do know they are an encrypted and safe website. I've read up on the code. But still, I just don't know for sure all the details on that. Anyone else wanna chime in? A lot has changed since I was away for a few months....

LOL, just like the one you're talking to

I like how you related "vote for me" as similar to telemarketers....yes, it's that annoying everyone. Especially at the dinner hour! lol

It's ok to ask for a vote or self promote if you do so in the proper channels on Steemchat. If you don't know how to do that, go to Steemchat and ask in Help - someone will guide you.

Thanks for doing this post @littlescribe. It's much needed right now.

My favorite "comment" was on a post I did about a month ago. It said this:

i am much impressed your post and waiting your post .i will proud

Well put! If you post good stuff people will appreciate your contribution by upvoting and leaving a complementary comment. Asking for votes is not professional; let your content speak for itself.

Good call on this one! Maybe I'll sit down and compile a list of other blogging/curating manners and see how far we can go with it.

I think that's a great idea. Go for it. Make sure you post it here in my comments so I know about it and can promote it in time.

Great one !
Really informative and useful post .
Thank you so much for tips .
