We were discussing voiceshares on whaletank hangout and I happened to meet a good friend @nutela who told me Processed Foods causes depression. It was new to me and excitement grew. I questioned the logic behind this and he went ahead to post and entire article on the subject which made sense to me.

World is running towards modernization every single day and in this rush we tend to forget the basic necessities of life. We do not have time for anything at all, that includes food. We do not have time to follow traditional ways of cooking and we often end up having no time to cook our own food. Result of this is processed foods, which is the life saver of many across the world. Our forefather were not as advanced as we today but they were definitely more cultured and this is ruining us.

With this as the background coming to the topic at hand, how does processed food causes depression. Isn't depression and food totally unrelated?? How can you compare and relate two different topics??. Well to understand it all we need to know what actually is depression??

Depression is a state of mind caused due to chemical imbalances in the brain. It is a mental condition and something that is used and abused wrongly by many. Depression is related to lots of topics and food is also a very important topic in this regard. But again the topic is inter related to changing life styles of human beings which is a common factor affecting both depression and food habits.

How Does Processed Food Cause Depression ?

  • Processed Food is addictive causing depression and early death. For self interests many food companies and government agencies have cheated consumers from many years. "The Hacking Of The Human Mind" speaks a lot on this topic
  • Sugar and other addictive substances, as well as chronic use of social media, release dopamine that fuels addiction and depletes serotonin, which fuels depression
  • Rising your serotonin level increases feelings of happiness. There are four ways to increase serotonin, and all are free: making human connections, contributing to a larger cause, coping with stress and cooking real food

Using organic produce in the process of healing the body is essential. Reducing toxic load in all forms is a primary aim so as to reduce the load on one's immune system allowing it to activate the body's own healing mechanism. It should go without saying but eat less processed foods and more wholesome foods! This means reading labels. The fewer ingredients the better, and if you see chemical additives, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors (usually represented by numbers) leave it on the shelf or as David Wolfe says "use it as a house brick".

Maintaining immune system to work at optimal levels is the key and your commen is very informative in that regard...thanks a lot

Hi @voiceshares! Nice post! Processed food maybe OK sometimes but not everyday. Nothing beats the fresh farm vegetables ( not those with tons of fertilizers and insecticide)

@tiffanyrej - Even that is hard to come by these days isnt it... organic farming is just picking up the trend

Unhealthy food does not just cause depression, there are a lot of health problems from skin diseases to cancer. So it's good to prepare our own food with healthy ingredients

Anyway it is better to stay as natural as possible, but current lifestyle makes it f difficult to do so
