[Vlog] Heavyweight Champs don't need to hack social media to 10x... someone tell Deontay!

Hacking for attention

We are living in an age, the social media age, where many people from all walks of life and professions are competing for attention. The past week or so has been a classic example. From Kanye West's tweets to Deontay Wilders insta-messages; it often seems like it is not enough to simply be super talented at what you do; it now seems you have perform circus tricks on social media to garner the attention your abilities deserve.

Or do you?

Heavyweight focus

In today's video I discuss the irony of heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder, diving onto Instagram to let the World know he is willing to pay Anthony Joshua $50million to fight him.

We can debate the seriousness of the offer however to me it is odd that this is playing out in the public arena. I'd argue that of all people a fighter at the top of the heavyweight boxing tree does not need to 'hack' social media to raise their profile. Legends like Muhammad Ali have already done the heavy lifting for them. Today there are two requirements to gain all the fame you need as a heavyweight boxer.

Number one; Knock people out. Number two; take risks.

Prime Mike Tyson was a classic example of how the world responds to an exciting heavyweight that KOs all comers.

Whilst Wilder is knocking out all comers; the knock on him has been that he hasn't taken enough risks in his 40 fight career.

You can contrast Wilder's popularity in the US with Anthony Joshua's in the UK. Joshua is not just popular because he knocks out people. He also takes risks. Winning Olympic Gold as a relative novice. Fighting for the World title whilst he still had his pro training wheels on. Taking on Klitschko before he was really ready and persevering.

That, along with assembling a well oiled promotional team (that very much work for him not vice versa) are the reasons Joshua can pack out 90k stadiums in the UK.

Main, mass appeal

Joshua's social media presence is very much ancillary to his main appeal; an exciting Knock-out artist that takes on all comers. As it should be for the heavyweight champ.

For Wilder and all other heavyweights - the advice is simple. Take the risk. Fight Joshua. Make it exciting. Win all lose the eyes of the world will be on you. As a consequence you'd garner the kind of attention (and revenue) that a million controversial tweets cannot reach... because that is the magic of heavyweight boxing.

I completely agree with your advice.Take the risk and fight with Joshua or Deontay Wilder the focus will be on you automatically.Heavyweight boxing is a very exiting game itself. If you take risk in your life you will achieve something big.

It's strange how public figures have taken to social networks to become a little more famous, I was reading that fame or power or at least believing that you have power, increases dopamine levels in the brain and somehow blocks rational ideas, leading to inappropriate decisions, being honest I don't like boxing, I don't know many of its rules but, just knowing that there is a proposal with thousands of dollars in between makes me forget the thrill of seeing a meeting of those, for money the dog dances, then the thrill of the meeting is distorted a little, but in the world of fame, nothing surprises me anymore.

When I first heard about the challenge, I was like Joshua should not honour it cos of the approach. But then, who are mine?

Joshua is my favorite anytime anyday

Joshua vs. Wilder would be a huge fight and I'm sure it will happen. Wilder is off to an impressive start and has a freakishly powerful right hand. Unfortunately for him, he is not a household name right now, but that will eventually change if he fights the best possible opponents and knocks them out. The public loves knockout artists.

I get the sense that Wilder is a little jealous that Joshua has gotten more acclaim than he has and is earning much larger purses. Wilder's best play is to accept a fight with Joshua even though Joshua will take the lion's share of the purse. The money that Wilder will make will still be enough to secure his financial future for the rest of his life. If Wilder wins the fight, which he certainly has the ability to do, then he will become a star and earn bigger purses in the future.

Joshua vs. Wilder would attract a lot of attention because it would feature two big young heavyweights with KO power. Each fighter would have a legitimate chance to win so the public will pay to see it. If the fight is competitive and exciting, the fighters could do it again once or twice more and live like kings for the rest of their lives. The fight will be risky to both guys but well worth the risk. They certainly won't be fighting for peanuts.

Yes, marketing is huge. The future is "attention marketing". Just like conor mcgregor, great fighter and the way he markets himself. He's more famous than better fighters. :)

Hehe, Is he already too much money? Anthony Joshua must win!

Love u Joshua!!

Interesting to know that Wilders approach in instigating this fight was through social media. I’m not personally familiar with boxing, but I would say it’s seems a risk to present the situation in such a public way. Although being a sport, I can see why there’s such a huge emphasis on creating hype. The more people that can find entertainment in the situation, the more there is to gain especially if there is money involved. But I would think it shouldn’t matter because when it comes down to it all things will be settled when it’s actually time to fight. But I guess if you have the world viewing and potentially supporting you, it might further push your drive to win atop having skills.

Also I wanted to say thank you for the recent support you’ve shown me on my content. I made a post about it yesterday and it received a lot of attention but I feel like it would defeat the purpose if the person it was intended for didn’t actually see it. So I just wanted to let you know. Thank you once again for your kindness. It definitely means the world to me.

Mike Tyson was pure gold for the media in his time let alone what he'd put out on youtube, dtube, steemit, et al.

It makes me wonder how wild the ride would have been with Mike Tyson if social media was around at this level back in the day!
