Old Water Pumps Pumping Water

Two old pumps water pumping water into bucket. As you can see we have a vintage gas engine running with rubber belt. Belts are the cheapest utility for power transmission between shafts. This belt is a loop of flexible rubber belting relies on friction to operate, but excessive friction wastes energy and rapidly wears the belt.

Factors that affect belt friction include belt tension, that’s why you see most engines on wheels. Just move it to get the right tension. That’s not the only way belts wear, contact angle, and the materials used to make the belt and pulleys. Flat belts also tend to slip on the pulley face when heavy loads are applied. Flat belts were widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Pulleys were made with a slightly convex surface to help because flat belts tend to climb towards the higher side of the pulley. By having a crowned surface rather than flat, allows the belt to self-center as it runs.

I think its great that we have people that keeping this pump and engines running for others to see.
