Chris Bishop on Artificial Intelligence
Another fantastic lecture from Chris Bishop at The Royal Institution. He covers the history, the present and the future of artificial intelligence. It covers everything from Alan Turing, AlphaGo to the Singularity. And even HAL 9000!
Bishop has a very realistic view of artificial intelligence, far removed from the pessimism shown in Hollywood or even the likes of Elon Musk and Stephen Hawking. It's a view that makes sense to me, like we discussed in the comments of my previous post about AI.
It's an hour long, but it's structured and narrated so eloquently time just flies. So make some time and watch this little gem. If you have one hour to learn about AI, this has to be it.
By the way, look up Chris Bishop on YouTube - he has several lectures on a wide variety of topics. All highly recommended!
Very much in line with your comments; Hollywood kind of paints a horrible world dominated by robots and so. Reality is that human beings will use technology to be able to make better use of their own lives by engaging in activities that allow for their passion to be addressed. Today most of all only think about working, producing something to get a trade unit (money). Still, once we get to really do what we like, life will become enjoyably as never before.
So ENJOY LIFE !!!!
To be fair, those risks do exist. I mean, not like Terminator, but more along the lines of what Elon Musk is concerned about. Let's see how it turns out!

Death, misery, destruction - it all sells well, that's why it's very popular to make those doomsday AI shows/movies.
That's of course true. Conflict is at the center of pretty much every work of fiction. That said, it's good to see many friendly AIs in movies, games and books of late. Conflict comes from elsewhere. The evil AI fad is over!
Hah, let's hope so!
If we don't like how smart computers have become, we can always reprogram them in brainfuck.
