Remembering a fallen Highlander from WW1

in #veterans6 years ago (edited)

On this day,104 years ago. Whilst fighting during the Battle of Mons in France, a man called Samual Evans died in defence of his country. For almost 20 years, he proudly served his nation, from the Second Boer War until his death during the First World War.

At the time of his death, he was the same age as myself. Leaving behind a young family of 11 children and a wife. The State did not provide for his family after his death, and his widow was left to live her life out in poverty. His son, my Grandfather, was only a few weeks old when Samuel died. My Grandfather would later fight in the Second World War.

Our history and culture is important to us! We must learn from the past as to build a better tomorrow. Our culture is a living link to our ancestors.
