A walk across Westminster Bridge, London... In a kilt!

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

London, the capital of the United Kingdom and once the heart of the British Empire.
At almost two thousand years old, London has survived the Romans, World Wars, Terrorism and Monty Python's Flying Circus.

A city of many contrasts, great wealth and opportunity. Although many argue such opportunities and investments are rare outside of the capital.

Today I will take on a journey, to the start of this year when I was invited down to the Palace of Westminster to receive a BCA Medal for my efforts abroad. This was the first medal that I've received since I completed a tour with the British Army in Bosnia almost two decades ago. (Damn, I feel old)

Let us begin our Journey at Westminster Bridge

Westminster Bridge is a bridge over the River Thames, linking Westminster on the west side and Lambeth on the east side.

This iconic bridge is painted predominantly green. This is the same colour as the leather seats in the House of Commons which is on the side of the Palace of Westminster nearest to the bridge. Conversely, Lambeth Bridge is painted red, the same colour as the seats in the House of Lords!
This is an iconic site

Crossing the bridge, we see my ugly mug skewed due to the sun in my eyes and.... What appears to be a bunch of danglers on the Bridge... On closer inspection those shapes do look rather "Suspect", maybe it's due to my kilt or an unintended consequence from the bridge's design?

Across Bridge at night... Do not fear, the sun did not sudenly disapear. But across the Bridge, without the 'pesky' tourists. We get a photo of the fancy lamposts near parliament and Big Ben under repair. That person in the picture isnt one of Londons Ladies of the night but alas... is me :(.

Continuing our walk we come to The Palace of Westminster. This is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament. Some strange looks were given to me in my Kilt but alas, I think most thought that I was just a rather unattractive bird or a Super Hero!
At this point we're on the garden just outside of the Old Palace Yard (Grid Ref: 51.498871, -0.126353 )

For our American friends, you may recognise this Statue. It is off none other than the great Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. He overlooks Parliament, a great reminder of responsability and steadfast during adversary. It can be easy to walk past this statue without knowing of its existance even thought he stands infront of Parliament. His Grif Ref is 51.5007198,-0.1282412,125

And finally, a bonus picture for you. This is "London Eye", a giant Ferris wheel next to Westminster Bridge. Personally, I recommend a trip to the Shard for a better view over London.

And so we end our journey. Until next time, take care and be safe!
