Look Ma! No Handlebar … Oh, It’s Been Moved, to Make a Wheelchair-Friendly Motorbike – Vehicle Photography

in #vehiclephotography6 years ago (edited)

When I first saw this strangely modified motorbike, I could not figure out why it had been modified or what it was used for.

Side-seat driver

For some reason, the handlebar had been moved to the sidecar. The complete handlebar unit – including the throttle, the headlamp, the brake levers, and probably the ignition – was affixed to the front of the sidecar.

...

The relocated handlebar was connected to the steering column with a simple tie rod. But there was no seat in the sidecar. (See photo #2.)

World’s first 7-wheel vehicle *

It turned out to be a very brilliant innovation … a 3-wheel bike that a wheelchair-bound person can drive by her/himself.  (See photo #3)

As you can see in photo #2, a wheelchair can access the sidecar by a ramp at the rear. (Something like a mini-tailgate.)

...
The floor of the sidecar is only about 15 centimeters above the road, providing a short, gentle slope for the “chairperson” to climb.

And once the “chairperson” has boarded, there’s a handy chain that s/he can pull to raise and close the tailgate / ramp. (The chain is barely visible in photo #2, running along the left edge of ramp to the front of the sidecar. In photo #3, the ramp / tailgate has been raised and closed, and the lady is driving away.)

A few days later, I saw another “wheelchair-friendly motorbike” driving down the street, and was able to take a quick snapshot as it rode by. (see photo #4)

Nothing special, just a common-sense improvement

In Thailand and most of Southeast Asia, a motorcycle sidecar is a standard form of transportation, for both cargo and people. (See photos #5 and #6.)

Such jerry-rigged bikes are very common here, carrying everything from fruits and vegetables to animals and people – and a whole lot more .

So, while others might see the above contraption as a brilliant innovation, for the locals, it’s simply a logical development and a necessary innovation.
Also, see the older bike in photo #7, which also has a wheelchair-accessible sidecar, but whose handlebars have not been modified. The driver can “park” her/his wheelchair on the sidecar, then move over and sit on the bike’s saddle.
...

Either the gears and brakes have been modified, or the driver has enough movement in his feet to be able to operate the standard functions on such a bike.

Ride on. Ride easy.

In developed countries, certain cities have public “Wheel-Trans” systems, but many of them are inefficient and expensive. Therefore, it was great to see that the locals here in Southeast Asia have devised this simple and very effective solution. Ride on. Ride easy.

* For those of you who are as poor at math as I am, simply do the following addition. One motorbike (2 wheels) plus one sidecar (1 wheel) plus one wheelchair (4 wheels) equals 7 wheels. I think.

This is really nice to see. I noticed things like this in Laos where they have so many amputees. But not motorized.

On another topic, I am starting to get people putting their photos in my replies too. What could be the idea behind this strategy? Steemit and its mysteries...

Ya, it's a great innovation. Let's those handicapped people move around independently.

As for the photos in comments / replies, it does seem to be getting worse. Maybe new Steemers, assuming that it's an easy way to succeed here.

Maybe - but annoying :)

Most annoying. Try to ignore.

Wow, it's amazing what people do with side cars!

Amazing from our perspective, maybe, but for them, it's simply the most convenient transportation. For the man in your photo, it beats riding the pig!!

And I'm sure the pig also prefers riding to walking.

Thanks for posting this photo. (Normally, I don't appreciate it when Steemers post irrelevant and nonsensical photos in the comments section. But this add a nice touch to my post.

LOL - on my main account I've never done a comment without a pic but on this new account I'm trying to do things differently - and this is the first comment I've ever done on Steemit in two years without a picture!

Awesome transport. For the first time I see such a moving means. It looks very economical and practical. Good luck to you and Love

Удивительный транспорт. Я впервые вижу такое движущееся средство. Это выглядит очень экономно и практично. Удачи Вам и Любви

Those are just really cool and helpful for people! Here in Thailand i see them everywhere - Some people transport animals with them, like on your picture and others have a shop on the side, where they can make BBQ etc. But the thing with the wheelchair is new to me , great idea! Nice inovation!

In Toronto, there's a "Wheel Trans" system, in which there's a special mid-size bus of sorts. I believe the riders must make an appointment for a ride, like a day in advance. And recently, I've heard that the system often fails to keep the appointments.

So, seeing this here in Thailand, I'm wondering if maybe these "developing" countries have surpassed the G7 countries in certain ways.

There you can see that developing countries are great in inovation and finding solutions. Never underrate them, ha!

Wow, This is a unique concept for handicapped people. The vehicle not only allows them to move but also allows them to make an earning by selling eatable items, clothes etc. Moreover I have seen this innovation being utilized by normal people for transportation of goods as well. I hope this is not patented by big corporates yet, as the demand for such a low cost vehicle will increase and with it the price as well!!

It's so common here that there are probably hundreds of small machine shops where a welder can construct a sidecar in a few days.

I doubt if any corporation can patent this type of basic design – altho I'm sure they'll try!!

Admire the Automotive prowess of the Thai welders to design a vehicle which can be used for social, commercial and individual reasons :)

i think this bike is very useful for every middle class person for their small business as well as transportation and also for handicap person will easily use this bike for their daily earning.

Good work.
