Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Movement Gaining Momentum in Hawaii

Did you know at one time, scholars and scientists in Hawaii decided it was impossible for polynesians, specifically Hawaiians, to have the #technological know how to create a #sailing #canoe capable of crossing the #Pacific ocean? On top of that, #Hawaiian #culture and Hawaiian language was delt with in a similar manner as many #NativeAmerican tribes... beat it out, teach it out and belittle it.

Fastforward from the days of Hawaiian culture demonization where #children and adults alike were made to feel shameful for speaking their #poetic language or practicing their unique cultural ways and you will find a Hawaiian cultural #renaissance. Blossoming over many years, #synchronistically touching many facets of #life in all corners of Hawaii, Hawaiian culture began to #rise.

Today in the year 2017 more than 100 years since the US military aided greedy businessmen in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and imprisoned their beloved Queen in her own palace, Hawaiians have regained some of what was once lost. Dignity, self respect, pride, language, arts, dance, cultural wisdom, farming practices, and a sense of knowing where you are from with hundreds of years of generational history and records.

I took this image aboard a Hawaiian sailing canoe which represents all of these things. This canoe was built by a #family, a #beautiful family with a steadfast #dedication to share the knowledge of Hawaiian voyaging with other Hawaiians who have never had an opportunity to learn their own culture. Even if you aren't Hawaiian, having #aloha for all is a cultural practice of seeing the love of creation in everyone, therefore you will likely be welcomed to learn alongside Hawaiians, locals and visitors alike.

In 2017 the #Worldwide voyage, with crews of men and women aboard Hawaiian Voyaging canoes, succeeded in sailing around the world, sharing the greatness of their achievements against all odds. Not only have they proven ancient Hawaiians in fact did have the #technology to sail around the world before western explorers did, but with ancient #star knowledge and #navigational wisdom being relearned, they are sharing the #ancient #ancestral #wisdom to empower and inspire generations to come.

It is more than a statement though, it is a symbol of #hope and a beacon for those Hawaiians who may not have had an #opportunity to learn and grow up experiencing their culture, as many still do not. But just as these Hawaiian voyaging canoes are growing in number, so too are the #conscious minds of the next generation of #Hawaiian #Leaders who are #rising up. Not just for the Hawaiian people who are still struggling to exist in their own homeland, but for all people who have struggled and felt oppressed for simply wanting to #live.

I hope you will take this opportunity to #resteem this so more of the world may know the struggle Hawaiians have faced and still face to practice their own culture. It is a struggle all indigenous people face, and as we become more aware of these cultural struggles, the more #compassionate and understanding we can be to our fellow #humans.
