The environmental effects of the automobile are well known. Motor vehicles cause, for example, as much as 75 percent of the noise and 80 percent of the air pollution in our cities, and the industry must face mounting pressure from environmentalists. Modern motor vehicles are safer and more reliable than thry have evrr beento yet more than 1 million people are killed in car accidents around the world each year, and more than 50 million are injured. Why? Largely because one perilous element in thr mechanics of driving remains unperfected by progress the human being.
