Good morning Steemians! Look what I found the other day at the market? I didn’t know what it was, but it was so beautiful I knew it *just had to be good Do you know?

I brought two of these beauties home and started researching!

And Yes! It is Edible, and it is a fruit!

It’s the Dragon Fruit, Strawberry Pear or Pitaya!

So many interesting facts about this little gem! Where does it grow? Does it grow on a tree?

It grows on a cactus! The plant is indigenous to Mexico and the Americas. It is grown in zones 10 and 11 in the United States, and may bear fruit within one year of planting. That means Southern Florida, Yay!

Amazing isn't it!

The flower blooms in the evening, survives one night and is pollinated by moths. Isn’t that beautiful?

Glad you finally found some of these beauties. They always seem to be in season here! Though the fruit doesn't have much taste just love its texture! Pink ones are slightly sweeter. I bet it taste great in combo with the blueberries. Have a lovely weekend!

It was! the fruit itself was very mild but the fact that it is high in protein and low in sugar made it a great addition to the smoothie! blueberries were wonderful. Thanks Amy!

I've tried dragon fruit, delicious juice drink. especially when we drink in hot weather. Thanks for the information

You are welcome! I hope it was helpful!

My son used to be obsessed with dragonfruit. They cost a fortune where we lived but how can you refuse fruit to a kid! This looks refreshing and perfect!

Yes, you're right, can't refuse your child, especially when it comes to food that is good for them. My daughters, now both adults are such healthy eaters it's tough to keep up with them, let alone cook they way they like to eat! Thank you, you're so kind, I really appreciate it!

you do a fantastic job. ini and i were just talking this morning about how amazing you are with your cooking and how you're so open to growing and eating more healthy. you've really touched him with how you prepare meals just for him (no one else does that!!) xoxox

I've tasted one years ago. But I didn't find any flavor to it. I thought it would be like a kiwi - and they don't have much flavor really either. Maybe it wasn't ripe enough or just wasn't a good one, that happens sometimes.

You;re right, the taste was very mild. The fact that it is high in protein and low in calories made it a nice addition! I'm trying to watch the fruits and vegetables as I combine them so I don't have a sugar drink but a healthy one!

Awww that's sad for me to hear because I live in Bali where they are in season almost all of the time and while their texture is similar to kiwi, their flavor is quite different. Very sweet and I wish I could compare it to something... Mine are pink which do play a difference but I think the biggest factor is it being shipped across the world and being picked too young. You've got to try one where they come from just as they ripen. Totally different experience :)

I bet they are! That's why eating local is the best for taste. You live in Bali...wow. Beautiful place I hear.

I just saw you're from Canada and that's where I had my first tasteless dragonfruit... they just have to go too far to get there and the climate is not good for them... hence control via the grocery store. Don't judge it based on that :)

Ya, I grew up in Canada but moved to Bali after traveling for a couple of years, it really grew on me and the fruit is fresh and amazing ;)

Good to know!! Guess you don't miss the snow :)

Hahaha the snow is a large part of my departure ;)

I love it! I eat dragonfruit daily, here it's always in season but we have the bright pink ones you may see in my recipes sometimes. They are quite sweet and I like to eat them right out of their skin with a spoon ;) I love this recipe, I wish I could get some blueberries but the temperature is just too hot here for them. Can't have everything I guess. Though, the US does it pretty well with their imports haha ;)

You are definitely lucky to have these beautiful gems all the time. I know a lot of flavor is lost when fruits are picked too early. We do have a lot of imports I am sure as I look at labels although our climate is tropical enough to actually grow some of these neat fruits! The blueberries, yes a blessing and so sweet, and local! lol

I have been searching for these everywhere in London, dying to try them! Your photos are making me crave them even more 😁

This was the first time I have seen them. So excited to try! Their normal season is June-September. Perhaps you'll see them around June?

Thanks for the tip! Hopefully I'll track some down then 😄
