Ethical Transactions in a Transformed Marketplace: Nick and Hayley Visit the Sydney Vegan Markets.

in #vegan6 years ago

Thinking carefully and spending your dollars wisely can result in a transformed ethical economy. One such marketplace is the Sydney Vegan Market in Marrickville, Sydney.

Last weekend, Hayley and I decided it was high time to check out the Sydney Vegan Markets. The markets are now located in Marrickville at the Addison Road Community Centre and are held on the first Saturday of every month.

Our last adventure through a vegan-specific marketplace, was actually the Sydney Vegan Festival, a couple of years back. These kinds of places are every vegan's dream. You are surrounded by like-minded folk and don't need to read ingredient lists, and get to listen to some amazing stories.

..Quick tangent deviation.

At the Sydney Vegan Festival we heard first hand, the story of how the owners of Gigi Pizza in Newtown turned their menu vegan after being established as a non-vegan Pizzeria to the uproar and outrage of worried family members and confused omnivores.

Suffice to say, even among omni's, Gigi's make sensational pizza. Hayley and I have eaten pizza in New York, and Rome and it's the best we've eaten. It probably helps that the entire menu is vegan and you don't have to ask and nit-pick through the menu in order to get something edible. And the tiramisu is hugger-fluffin' out-of-this-world.

..and back to the markets!

With the vegan movement on the rise, many specialty businesses have found a new customer base of ethically-minded individuals who are seeking products that come from plant-based sources. Having the market on a monthly basis means there is a regular, reliable, large marketplace to enjoy the best part of a full day chilling out and eating some incredible food. Of course there are other things too, including political petitions, clothing, activism stickers and kombucha. You heard me right. Kombucha.

If you're interested in reading more about this fermented tea drink, a recent review of the health benefits of kombucha published in the Journal of Food can be found here. Probably a whole lot easier just drinking matcha. More to come, though!

Having got some of the fluff and fancy out of the way, treat yourself to some photos of our adventure.

Over the Moo is a vegan ice cream producer that create coconut based ice creams. We ordered the triple chocolate with a heavy handed drizzle of peanut butter slathered over the top for an extra dollar. Yes, please! This serving came to $7.

The line was pretty long - but made a lot of sense as the day seemed to be getting hotter by the hour. We first tried Over the Moo ice cream in the food pavilion at the Royal Easter Show a few years back. It is so reassuring to see they've maintained success in their (currently) niche market share.

What can I say about the guys at Artisa? Suffice to say, we bought a packet of their ash dusted cashew-based cheese. We were suckered in by the free samples. I was blown away by the "cheesy" taste. I've narrowed it down to the slightly acid aftertaste in the back of the throat that I vaguely remember from when I used to eat expensive dairy cheese. This is high grade gear. I would definitely buy more in the future.

Hayley just enjoying a few more free samples!

The taste of Lebanon.. BAKLAVA!

Finally, vegan baklava I could get my teeth around! Monkey-girl also gave the baklava the 'thumbs-up' sign of approval.

Visiting a vegan market is great if you love being surrounded by doggies! This one was a real cutie. Take a close look at how long his eyelashes are! Most people are happy to allow you to pat them. I often make way more of a fuss about the fur baby and forget to say g'day to the person at the other end of the leash. Whoops!

Alright. So I've been reading a hell of a lot of praise for 'Soul Burger' on the Vegans in Australia Facebook page. I always just thought that Lord of the Fries was the best. I hadn't considered that others could be better. Having spoken with the cashier, he explained that they now have three shops already open in Sydney - Randwick, Glebe and Parramatta - along with the new fourth store opening in Newtown! I'm surprised they didn't open in Newtown earlier.

For travellers, Newtown is your Sydney suburb for seriously dense vegan eats. Lentil as Anything and Gigi's Pizza are my top picks for the area. There are more, though! I'll let you explore!

Check out the Southern Fried Chick'n burger. The texture was consistent with what you'd expect chicken to be like. Everything about the burger was great except for just one thing - all my waiting for Hayley to get back and taking photos of it, resulted in a less-than-piping-hot burger. Eating on the ground in bark, didn't really help the experience, either. However, just to be clear, the burger was YUMMO! I rate it 4 vegans out of 5.

All adventures have to end somewhere. Chowing down on vegan jerky from the Cruelty Free Shop in the car on the way home ended our adventure.

The day was worth it. Full tummies and some gourmet vegan cheese stashed away, not to mention all the good vibes meant we were really guaranteed a fun time in Marrickville last Saturday. If you're in Sydney or surrounds, if anything, it's worth all the free samples!

Peace, YO!

Nick.
