New user contracts
This is an idea to combat some of the spam and negative behaviours that plague the Steemit platform and suffocate other users. It is a fairly simple behavioural nudge that would likely affect the actions and decisions of many new users.
There are two related ideas here:
- Entry screen
- Before Posting
1. Entry screen 'Contract'
At first login, there is a simple checklist of basic negative behaviours to avoid with a short description available. This would be a very simple way to make sure that some basic points are covered without the need to read the FAQ (which would be linked) that so many apparently do not bother to read. This could easily be translated into many languages in a drop-down selector which could then preset for idea two(2). It would work as a simple social contract.
This lets basic new users know there can be consequences at Steemit for my behaviours and force them to accept. After this, there is essentially no excuse to say 'I didn't know' so I don't deserve flags. It serves as a very brief but potentially powerful reminder/warning and may make many check just what is expected of them as members of the community.
With a few conversations, similar contracts could be implemented at major signup gateways. These could be tailored to the specifics of the gateway platform of course.
2. Before Posting contract
Next, for users between (arbitrary) startup and 50, there is an unavoidable confirmation of a few points before each post made. This is a reminder and a receipt of acknowledgement. Again, this could be easily language localised in settings or from the language chosen in the Entry Screen contract (1).
This will make new users continually aware of their behaviours and will explicitly identify some of the core tenets of the Steemit philosophy. Of course, some adjustments to what appears here may be advisable but the contracts should be kept unavoidable and very specific.
I think that a few relatively simple (I do not understand the technical requirements) UI tweaks can vastly reduce a range of known negative behaviours and their impacts on the community.
I would be interested to get some feedback on this idea or possible variations.

Yes, this removes the guilt as they know they have been warned :)
For some new users that come in though, it may make them think about it a little differently than a 'normal' social platform.
I think the entry screen is brilliant idea...
But not sure about the "before posting" one, because it will take some time from the many people who are aware of it...
If must, I'd make it only appear for people who have low rep (30 or less), and maybe I'd change these check boxes to just one:
With a link to "read the guidelines."
I don't think the time would be much of an issue if they put some thought into their content however though. as this would take 3 seconds to get through. It would just be a slight annoyance but those that put some effort in, won't face it for very long.
The rep has to be high enough however that they are likely going to face it several times before it disappears. As is, my 100% vote will take a new user over 30 rep already. I would like it to last a bit more than one post.
The reason I separated them out in the article is to make it easier to see and do what you just did.

The last problem is that what someone considers scam/spam isn't considered like that in someone else, if there was a big list of things considered spam here it'll be great.
For example, some people think posting referral links in every comment is completely normal, other think just the mention of referral links as spam...

good post. you are true in your your statement of making readers restless. but being an open social media controls must be mostly self analysis. thank you for the post.
I like it, its simple enough and would not require hard forks or anything of the sort. It could be implement right on to the steemit website, granted if the users are bots this would not do anything. But... I'm inclined to think that most of the accounts that beg for follows are real people, like the one you flagged on this post below.
I'll be waiting to see what some of the bigger users have to say about this. I find it funny how you are thinking of ideas and I'm writing satire about this problem.. but you are being much more helpful than I am.
I like the idea of the list when they sign up, good to put it there just to make sure newbies are aware of the Steemit standards.
