Curation Slider SP requirement Reduction + Gradients

in #utopian-io8 years ago (edited)

Components

  • A reduction in the Vests required to obtain the curation slider to 250 SP
  • Have the gradients set for 25%, 50% and 75% until they have 500 SP

Proposal

To reduce the amount by approximately half to obtain the curation slider and have set gradations for low SP accounts.

Benefits

With the price of Steem increasing, it is harder and harder for new accounts to obtain a curation slider which makes it difficult for them to engage widely on the platform. By reducing the SP required, it gives them a chance to more actively spread their voting power.

Currently 500 SP (approx for Vests needed for slider) @ 5.40 Steem price is a ~20c vote. This is significant for some people on this platform. Getting the slider at 250 SP means they can adjust more precisely and share outwards as well as engage more heavily with comments.

However, it is not beneficial if they start spreading 1% votes either so, I propose a graded slider in quarters so that they can spread significant value without being fractions of cents. At 250 SP, a 25% vote is ~2.5 cents.

If users use this well, they will not only be able to spread the value further but reward comments on their posts they consider worthy without burning as quickly through their voting power.

This change may get smaller accounts more engaged and feel more control over their experience here. It will hopefully also allow the smaller account to have more presence on the platform.

When they earn their 500 Steem power, then the slider gradients change to the normal gradients from 1 -100%.

I also suggest that when an account hits 10,000 SP, 0.5 and 0.25 gradients are added so that there is more control for the larger accounts over comment votes. This may encourage them to reward more comments to a lesser degree.

I propose this now for testing purposes before Steem price rises significantly. This way we can see how people will use it and make adjustments if needs be. It also gives learning for later if the price increases again and the requirements to get the slider need reevaluation.

Many newbie minnows are voting at 1% through other platforms like dtube, dsound or dmania... I also think busy give the voting slide to everyone...

Yes, this makes the case for the function here even stronger I think.

Yep... also in those platform the function must be improved, having newbies with 5 SP upvoting with 1% is worthless... The voting slide should be the same on all platforms...

Yes, I agree, at least at this stage they should be the same. I don't see the use in tiny accounts voting at tiny percentages. It is just not worth it for anyone.

Thank you for the contribution. It has been approved.

I second the motion! One day (sooner rather than later) I will get one of these fancy sliders! I feel guilty when I have voting power depletion and can't/don't vote as often as I would like, especially in the comment department. I think this is a great solution and well thought out with the proportional slider gradients. I know I will feel more in control over my experience once I get a slider and it would definitely encourage more community engagement.

This is exactly what I would hope for, people looking to engage and be more a part of the community. Thanks for commenting :)

All good things come to those who wait! Hurry up and wait then! hahaha Thanks for always engaging the community in an edifying way! Have a great weekend and Happy Australia Day!

Cheers mate. I try my best here and have a great weekend too.

Excellent proposal! Yes, PLEASE!

I have a very hard time because I really try to reply and appreciate all meaningful comments on my posts (and I do get a lot of comments - two of my posts had over 100 comments), as well as to engage other people's articles by upvoting and commenting them, which is significantly depleting my voting power, and if I let it fall below 50%, my vote doesn't even provide a visible ($0.01) contribution.

I still don't have even 250SP, but the sooner I get the slider (of course with a gradient), the better.

Cheers!

I think it also may encourage smaller delegations to more people.

I agree with the concept, but I disagree with the specifics.

While I think that a slider should be added before 500SP, it should be done sooner than that.

Obviously it should't be done while your vote is still only worth $0.01 because then you're just be giving worthless votes. But once you have enough to give a $0.02 vote, you should have the ability to give only half of that away. So you would have a 50% and 100% option.

Once you had reached enough for $0.03 vote, you would have 33%, 66%, and 100% votes.

After $0.04 votes, the options would be 25, 50, 75, and 100% and that wouldn't change after that until you reached 500 SP or something.

The idea being to allow people to spread their votes across more people as it's advantageous to show appreciation to lots of small followers until you can build a large standing. It's hard to show appreciation when you can only do it 10 times per day.

tl;dr have the slider sooner, like once you have a $0.02 upvote

It needs to be at hard enough to reach that there is incentive to get there, it isn't too far away and on the path to get it, one can learn how to use the system well. What I find is even people that have been here for several months still do not understand some of the fundamentals of the system. Many still don't understand how curation works even though there is information in the FAQ and many posts on the topic.

In my opinion, there needs to be some difficulty to gain access to some areas and that difficulty is a path of learning, not arbitrary points. As price increases, 250 may be too high also but with the current SBD prices, it is not too bad. I am open to compromise of course but 2c is at around 40 SP. That is too low and remember that if this was implemented, a whole lot of people would instantly have access. Many with 40 SP haven't got a great grasp on the workings of the platform at this point which means they are not likely to use the slider well.

Of course, this is all open to discussion and I am unsure about the different points based on price but one it was set up, it could be adjusted as necessary.

I get your point. There should be something to work towards.

I'm thinking down the road though. As the price of Steem goes up the SP reward goes down, so it becomes more difficult to "level up." It will be interesting to see what happens with the whole "pegging" discussion going on. If they peg SBD to $1, it should lower the price of Steem too which would make it easier to "level."

I love the idea, but even if it doesn’t come to pass, I will have that slider.. by any means necessary..

Just takes time (or money). :)

@tarazkp I agree with your proposal and the general idea. I would suggest that it should be implemented at 100SP because it takes a long time to reach 250SP and i think 100SP is achievable in 3 months at least :)

It depends, many with 100 SP still do not understand how curation even works yet I find. As price increases though, 250 becomes quite high.

Busy.org introduces the slider to people with less than 500sp.

Seems like it's an interface limitation, not a limitation of the block chain

yes, it is Steemit, not the blockchain.

I would love this as an option. The ability to split your voting power earlier on steemit.

Do you think you would use it to engage differently?

Yeah I believe so. I would change up the voting power on comments primarily and leave post upvotes at 100%. This would depend on my activity and current voting power. The best thing would be the ability to better control our voting power so as to ensure we were getting the most of the votes given.

Awesome idea! I'm around that area and it would be so helpful. I have to use a 3rd party app like Busy to do 25% votes now.
