Scharmorton Roziere Balloon - Development for FlightGear
Introduction
FlightGear (http://www.flightgear.org) is an open source flight simulator that is even used in flight schools to train basic maneuvers, radio communication and navigation tasks. It is available for windows, mac and linux.
In this article I want to introduce my development of the Scharmorton Roziere Balloon. "Schar" is Russian for balloon, "Morton" is the main sponsor company.

- balloon envelope is 168 ft tall and 60 ft wide
- small helium balloonet (623 cubic meters) at top
- big helium balloonet (15.576 cubic meters) at middle position
- hot air ballon as surrounding hull
- travel in jet streams with 200-300 km/h and 40 degrees below zero.
Development steps
After I read about this amazing project I had to do it! I am using the gas-FDM in FlightGear with lots of own inventions till it fits the physics and chemistry of the real thing. It was a big task to understand it and then implement it in the model. The autopilot for stable altitude control is programmed with a 11 step logic controller.
My last commit fixed a sound problem at the start of the simulation, a new picture for the wind circle and proper installation and license instructions.

Some instruments are from my russian aircrafts, some from the pool of FlightGear. Some have modifications for this model. The model of the capsula and the balloon is from scratch with best knowledge from internet sources and Cameron Balloon UK. The FDM was super tricky! The programming of the autopilot systems took a few weeks. The interior is in a basic stadium, maybe some day I will work on it again.

Ja, in 10000 ft über den Verkehrsflugzeugen zu fliegen ist schon eine Sache, der gute Pilot musste alle 4 Stunden raus um das Eis von den Brennern abzuschlagen, das bleibt mir am Simulator erspart :)

It looks fantastic! I hear for the first time about this project and I am surprised by the speed of balloon. I bought a balloon flight to my Mother to her birthday and the 50 km trip took a halfday (including preparation and return). It was for her marvelous experience.
I am supposed the passengers travel in a cabin not basket in this balloon, isn't it? Or can it be replaced?

The difference is the altitude: you are maybe at 1-2 km above ground, this balloon goes up to 13 km, there are very strong winds, called jet streams. And it is very cold there and the pressure is also very low, so you need a pressured capsula.
