My Thoughts On DTube!

Hello Everyone, I am back, once again with a new post this time focused on DTube and how it is better than YouTube, a video platform that millions of people use every single day. I will be also focusing on pros and cons of DTube and how it can overtake YouTube in future and what things should be improved.

What Is DTube?

Before we get any further, let's just first understand what is this DTube. DTube (short form of Decentralized Tube) is a YouTube like video platform built on top of Steem Blockchain. It follows all the same principles that Steemit has but it is only focused on video content.

Video creators get's rewarded in Steem. Good videos that adds value to the community are also upvoted by the main @dtube account and get's good amount of money. All the rewards are distributed using Proof-Of-Brain that Steem Blockchain uses. The creator's of Steemit have also delegated over 1 million SP to @dtube so they can reward good content.

When Did DTube Gained It's Popularity?

Even though DTube became famous on Steemit as soon as it launched, outsiders didn't kicked in. DTube slowly gained more and more popularity each day after it's announcement but still the progress was a bit slow. DTube's popularity really pushed when up when adpocalypse happened on YouTube.

Many people were looking for good alternatives for YouTube because on YouTube all the videos were getting demonetized and the creators were not able to earn so much. In this search, they found DTube and started using it. Many peoples with thousands of subscribers moved to DTube.

Things I Like About DTube

Here are some things that are good about DTube and can help this platform succeed!

Decentralized

Let's now looks into features that DTube have and YouTube haven't. The key feature that makes DTube better than YouTube is that it's decentralized. No one can control what content should be shown and what should be not. Every video has the same amount of chance to be shown to a person. There are three main sections on DTube but you can also search for videos and get the results.

• Trending - Shows videos that have earned most in last few days
• Hot - Shows videos that have earned most recently
• New - Shows videos according to age (from new to old)

No Ads

The thing that most people love is that there are no ads on DTube. Since DTube has relies on Steem Blockchain there are no need for ads to distribute the rewards. The rewards are distributed according to the engagement the video gets.

No Censorship/Freedom Of Speech

Since DTube is decentralized, you can make video on anything you like. You can talk about anything, do anything without being worried that DTube will censor your content or your content will not be shown to others. Your account also will never be suspended!

Curators Searching For Good Content

In Youtube, even if you make fabulous content, in the start you will not get paid at all. In DTube, you will still get paid from the start. Curators are always ready to find good/valuable content and then reward them by upvoting that video with their high SP so leave your thoughts out about not being rewarded at the start. If you make good content then you will be!

Always Improving

It's been like a year since DTube was first introduced and it has improved a lot since then. The DTube is continuously being improved by it's creators to make it better and better which is a good move. We can see dedication by the developers towards DTube.

Easy To Use

DTube is a very easy to use platform. Anyone who has Steem account can login to the website and start uploading videos. The options required when you're publishing videos are also very basic and easy to understand.

Engaging Community

DTube has a very good community built around it. They are always supported and trying their best to make the platform better. The Discord Server has over 4k members and most of them are very active. The developers are also very active. There once a time when users were not able to delete the videos after they were posted but since DTube has high quality developers, they easily made a tool to do so. Thanks @wehmoen ; )

Engagement Based Rather Than Views Based

As we all know YouTube is more views based than normal engagement based. I am glad that it isn't the case with DTube and that it focuses on engagement. Obviously, good content will get more engagement in form of comments and upvotes and this is which determines viral video on DTube.

DTalk

DTalk is a built in place to have chat with other DTube users and I really like this features. This can make the community even more engaging and lovable. We can also use this to get help from other users or for just having a good chat!

DTV

With the release of last mega update, DTV was added and now users can go live. I can really believe that it is a good step forward and can improve the platform overall.

Open Source

DTube is open source, which means anyone can easily contribute to it. All the code can be found over here.

Things I Would Like To Be Improved

Even though DTube has a ton of great features, it still needs somethings improved and here are those.

Very Similar To YouTube

DTube is very similar looking to YouTube. Even though some people consider this as a plus point, I don't. I think DTube should have it's own uniqueness and it's own style that other platform doesn't have. DLive, which is another DApp on Steem Blockchain has it's own style even though they could have copied Twitch, they didn't. I am not saying DLive is better in any way, I am just saying that it has it's own uniqueness.

Doesn't Have Analytics Page

If anyone of you have heard about SteemPeak, it has a great dashboard which includes good analytics about performance in last few weeks. I think that should also be included in DTube so video creators can see which videos performed well, which didn't, which week was the best, where was the downfall, all at one place.

Less Sustainability

Even though the creators gets rewarded if they make good content, there is no sustainability in it. You can't predict how much you are going to be earning on the next video you make. Even if the quality of the video is same. I think DTube should work on it to improve it.

Why Big YouTubers Won't Be Joining DTube Anywhere Soon?

As you can see above, I have brought up some pros and cons of this platform. Even after some good features, many big youtubers won't migrate to DTube and here's why.

Less User Base

Even though the community is very engaging and the platform is improving continuously, there is no doubt that it lacks good amount of users. People with millions or even hundred thousands people won't migrate to DTube because it has less users and they know they will earn significantly low amount compared to YouTube. The solution could be to run some ad campaigns to increase the amount of users that DTube has.

People Don't Understand It

DTube is fairly new and many people outside of Steemit just don't understand how it works and how it is better or they are just don't ready to read about it. There should a video that explains basics about DTube and how it works.

Final Thoughts

DTube is a great platform overall but it can become even more great if they add things that I mentioned above. Running ad campaigns will bring in more users that we all want. I also want to see them to make the rewards more sustainable. Thank you!
