Jan 2018 Steemit Post Benchmarking Report - Blockchain Business Intelligence

in #utopian-io7 years ago (edited)

December and January seen some awesome numbers in terms of both the pricing of STEEM and the number of new users that joined the platform but now it’s time to look at some stats around posts.

Every month I prepare an analysis of STEEMIT Posts (I exclude comments). The aim of this is to aid the community with a place in which they can benchmark their posts and to create an analysis that can be used for further comparisons at later stages. Personally I use this report to benchmark my own posts each month and track my progress on Steemit.

If you missed the December Report you can find it here

https://utopian.io/utopian-io/@paulag/december-post-bench-marking-report-steemit-business-intelligence

This month I have made some additions to the report. You will now find Same Period Last year comparisons for financial performance and also the top earning Authors for the reporting period.

Financial Performance

December Report

Jan 17 Report

January 18 Report

4.png

In Jan 18 the % of posts with no payout was 11%, this can be compared to 18.54% in December and 38% in Jan 17. Really good to see that less posts had no payout in Jan 18. The % of posts with a payout value of <=$1 is 64.17% in Jan up from 56.77% in December and 30% in Jan 17

The number of posts that earned over $500 increased from 3 in Jan 17 83 in December to 220 in January 18

The Average payout value for a post in January was $3.81, if we exclude the posts with no payout this value increases to $4.28 SBD. In December these values were $3.75 and $4.60. In Jan 17 these values were $4.73 and $7.65

The increase in the number of posts from Jan 17 to Jan 18 is a whopping 3560% and the total payout value has increased by 2847%

My Stats

5.png

50% of my posts had a payout of $50 or more, this is really awesome. I do however expect a change in Feb as I will be doing less data posts and trying a few other things.

Comments

December Report

January Report

9.png

The % of posts that received no comments is down from 47% in Dec to 44.6% in Jan 18, this seem to be offset with the % of posts that received between 1 and 10 comments. The number of posts that received 1000+ comments also went up in Jan to 7 from 3 in December

My Stats

10.png

Again I am happy with my own stats. 90% of my posts received 11 or more comments. 90 % of my posts were in the top 13% of posts made in terms of the number of comments.

Votes

December Report

January Report

11.png

The % of posts with 0 net votes reduced from 10% in Dec to 6% in Jan and the % of posts with 2-10 votes increased from 48% to 57%.

For a number of months in a row we have now seen an increase in the number of posts with net downvotes and there are more posts in Jan with net down votes then there are posts with between 101-500 votes.

My Stats

12.png

Wow, so happy to see 86% of my posts receiving 51+ votes and I do not use voting bots.

Other Data

13.png

The line chart above represents the number of new posts per day in Jan 18 and the bar chart below that shows the peak posting hours.

Conclusion

Jan 18 has shown tremendous growth since Jan 17 and also growth since Dec 18. The data would also suggest that there has been improvements in curation as there is a lower % of post with no comments. Without further analysis this is hard to prove as bots could be at play here.

So how did your posts do in Jan? Please do comment below and let us know

The Datasource and Query

As always I have connected to Steemsql managed by @arcange using Power BI and the query is used
for 2018 data was

 SELECT
 author,
 category,
  created,
  children,
  total_payout_value,
  net_votes,
  pending_payout_value
  FROM
  Comments (NOLOCK)
   where created >= CONVERT(DATE,'2018-01-01')
  and created< CONVERT(DATE,'2018-02-01')
  and depth = 0

And 2017 query was

SELECT
author,
category,
created,
children,
total_payout_value,
net_votes,
pending_payout_value
 FROM
 Comments (NOLOCK)
  where created >= CONVERT(DATE,'2017-01-01')
  and created< CONVERT(DATE,'2017-02-01')
  and depth = 0

@paulag, thank you for this detailed statistics. Count yourself lucky to be earning an average of $50/post. I've been on this platform for almost a year & can't remember ever earning up to $50 on my post, even with the aid of bots which I seldom use. This is very discouraging, I must confess.

The % of posts with a payout value of <=$1 is 64.17% in Jan up from 56.77% in December and 30% in Jan 17

The number of posts that earned over $500 increased from 3 in Jan 17 83 in December to 220 in January 18

A system where over 50% earn <=$1/post is not a fair one, IMO. I understand that rewards are relative to stake holdings in the HF 19.0-Equality era and many of the planktons AKA *redfish (< 500 SP) do not have much stake/vests. However, with the likes of @haejin & @me-tarzan allegedly & apparently constantly raping the reward pool with impunity, there might be very little hope for some of us who believe in the steemit ecosystem . I have 8,400 SP (personal), yet the average earning/post for me is $10, without using bid bots. The upcoming HF 20- Velocity might not solve these problems.
My question is those 220 people earning over $550/post, what are they writing?

@maryfavour, founder of @redfishpillar project.

hi @mayfavour and thanks for poping by.

you have more SP than me and I also dont use bid bots and no, i dont think the next fork will resolved this problem, i left you a comment about it on your post.

Its sad to say, but its not 220 people but 220 post....and you have already mentioned the names in your comment

@paulag, repository again, please switch to 'steemit/steem' :)

many thanks for info. I am waiting for your next content @paulag

Deep Analyzed, Thanks for share this info

Thanks for posting the latest numbers. It helps to benchmark performance for the rest of us. 50 votes per post and 11+ comments per post is fantastic! (applause) Anyway, going forward, might be interesting to track the correlation between the price of Steem and total posting activity. If payouts are spiking much higher because Steem is doing better, people will have a lot more incentive to post more often (more money to be made). But at the same time, newsfeeds will be clogged up with all those extra posts, and that might mean fewer views. Plus, as more people join Steemit, it will be increasingly harder to stand out and attract views. Just thinking aloud here... will be interesting to see what you find in the months ahead...

the next few months will be interesting, a tip for you, dont follow loads of people then your feed wont get clogged

I'm also on the $50 average boat.
Glad to see there are still some big numbers above that... one of these days we'll both get there :D

Cheers

see you at the top :-)

Thanks for the great post. By all these data, do we see the wealth and power on steemit start being more centralized or decentralized?

its still rather centralized

Are those payouts just for Dec or is that totals for Dec and Jan?
