The Gridcoin mining experiment - RAC is going down again
A last update of the Gridcoin mining experiment for this year. RAC seems to be going down again and I still have no clue why. I will continue gathering the data for a while but if nothing gives me a clue I need to reconsider the approach.
Purpose of the experiment
I continue this experiment because it provides interesting facts. The ones who are very involved in gridcoin know that RAC can change and is not predictable for various reasons. This experiment shows this with real life data and can help newcomers by example to see how complex gridcoin mining is and give experience users some data to look at and confirm their understanding and insights.
This data is gathered on a virtualized Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard x64 Edition running on a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 0 @ 2.30GHz [Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7] core with 4GB of RAM. The computing preferences are set to use at most 50% of the cores at 100% of the time. The project being crunched is VGTU.
Top 10 users
I'm now keeping track of the RAC of the top 10 users. It's interesting to see that these ten users together account for about 80% of the total team RAC. For this project @dutch is making the biggest contribution. If we zoom in we see that most probably pomegranate has left this project. I certainly hope that this extra data adds some insight in the RAC changes.
Evolution
For some mysterious reason the points awarded and RAC are going down again. I'm a bit surprised to see this happening as there seems to be no relation to the other data. I was especially expecting to see some correlation with the team RAC. There is of course a slight offset due to the low pass behavior so maybe it will change over time. For the moment team RAC has remained more or less stable.
For the moment it seems GRC seems on it's way to the moon. This should really convince more people to contribute to science in this lovely way.

Thank you for the good analysis regarding the RAC. I noticed that WCG only granted me 1 valid task per day and machine over the Xmax days - even though all my 4 machines when crunching full time. Maybe such a behavior could explain the magnitude drop?
Regarding the rise in GRC value - i think one should a bit
Hello, i would like to point out that a practical, widespread and usable crypto currency needs to fulfill 3 criteria:
1.) Low transaction cost - e.g. to buy a pizza without large addition costs
2.) Stable curency - e.g. if you sell the pizza you want to be sure that the currency is stable for the next days.
3.) Fast transaction - both people in the pizza place do not want to wait log to perform the exchange (pizza vs. currency)
I think Bitcoin does not fulfill most of the criteria today. However, we gridcoiners should not hope for an infinite rise in value.
best
Lars
I don't think so. The changes are smooth and there haven't been any WU shortages on VGTU that I know of.
At least i can agree with the observation that the there seems to less rewards. For me i did assigned more CPU into my projects, but i received less coins. I thought this was related to more competition since more and more people joined the network. Could the observed effects are beeing related to more people joining the team and crunching, but not being able to stake (solo mining with low amount of GRC)?
As there comes more competition in the project your magnitude will drop, that is how it works. But what is unclear is why the RAC itself drops.
Thank you for the contribution. It has been approved.
I recently came across gridcoin and the BOINC project, started exploring it a bit, looks very useful to the scientific community!
Thanks for the analysis

It is for sure. If you have any questions feel free to ask them. We have a very active and helpful community. @dutch is a prominent member here on steemit, he has written some really nice introductions.
Hey @jefpatat I am @utopian-io. I have just upvoted you!
