The Gridcoin mining experiment

in #utopian-io7 years ago (edited)

Purpose of the experiment

I continue this experiment because it provides interesting facts. The ones who are very involved in gridcoin know that RAC can change and is not predictable for various reasons. This experiment shows this with real life data and can help newcomers by example to see how complex gridcoin mining is and give experience users some data to look at and confirm their understanding and insights.

This data is gathered on a virtualized Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard x64 Edition running on a Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 0 @ 2.30GHz [Family 6 Model 45 Stepping 7] core with 4GB of RAM. The computing preferences are set to use at most 50% of the cores at 100% of the time.

History

Originally I started this experiment to investigate if it would be possible to predict gridcoin mining. Together with some other people in the community we thought this would be somehow, maybe, possible. By now we understood it is not that easy. I continue the data gathering however for the above mentioned reasons.

Adding GRC price

Gridcoin price has been quite stable most of the time. We have known a peak around June but other than that, compared to other cryptos gridcoin is quite stable. Since last week however we're experiencing again big changes in price.

Someone mentioned that this is actually what people mining are interested in: how much does mining generate. While I do not agree that such motivation is the only motivation I agree for a certain group of people it is. That's why I am now adding the gridcoin price over time and what this host is making. I have added the price evolution since I started logging the magnitude.

Evolution

How did the experiment evolve since last time? Not a lot. This post is more about adding the gridcoin price to the data. We see team RAC is further increasing and the host's RAC has remained quite stable.

In this last graph we can see how gridcoin price can influence earning a lot more than the actual BOINC crunching. At some points the RAC goes down and the earnings go up and vice versa.

Future

Mostly I only make a post when there is some change or there hasn't been any change for a while. This post is just an extra because of the addition of the price and thus it becomes more about gridcoin mining than about RAC. In the future I will return to my previous posting frequency.

Background

This post has most info about the first chart: The RAC experiment progress and request for help
This post has the motivation for the second chart: The RAC experiment continues
