The 3D printed gridcoin chip - Is nobody watching?
A while ago I have opensourced my design on the gridcoin marketing GitHub. I considered this project finished and was ready to fully commit on other fun things. Only thing left was to do some last prints for some nice people that asked for. Today I was finishing these and got really disappointed with myself. My last post about the 3D printed gridcoin chip made it to the trending page. 214 votes and 203 views. But nobody noticed the most obvious easter egg I built in. The left one is an old prototype. The right one is the final design (with the easter egg). Try to spot it ;-) But first some other 3D printing info.

Printing limitations
I have written about this before and how this makes this design on this particular printer challenging. The problem lies with the letters and the dual color. Each time the printer moves from one letter to the next it has to stop extruding, move the printer head up, move to the new position, move down and restart extruding. This not only happens for the blue letters but also for the white fills which are surrounded by blue. This time I took pictures while this was happening.
The easter egg
I purposely mirrored the logo to see if someone would notice, but no-one of those 200+ viewers actually saw it. Amazing!
Alright, I didn't, I just made a very stupid mistake. Now I go hide in the corner of shame.

Try to play with the retraction settings in your slicer. Maybe increasing the distance or the speed will reduce your problems with the movements.
The strining might also go away when you reduce the print temperature a few degrees.
I've thought about playing with the temperature but not the retraction settings. I'll keep it in mind. I was kind of done with this. The relief design looks and feels much better. But I can't end this with the error in the design. I have to do a reprint so I'll try and see if I can make improvements. Thanks for the advice!
this is cool, I should go rent the 4d printer and make some favorite coins just to hang on the christmas tree !
Let's keep that 3D ;-)

I barely see it after looking at this post then staring at the top picture. Maybe hard for most people to view it. The photo on the right with the left grid coming down into the center right. Then curve in covers part of the egg. It might be missed because a human brain dismisses it as a mistake.
Great design by the way. I would like one of those coins. But seeing how hard it is to make I will not bother asking. Maybe one day you can get someone to mass produce them for you. Than sell them on Amazon & Ebay. I would buy one !
Just edited - Go to control-shift-I, to inspect the photo in a larger picture to see it. Notice some other inside boarders also.
I guess you don't know what an easter egg is?

Reread the last sentence ;-)
