Remove Spyware: How to Uninstall Webfetti Adware? A Step-by-Step Tutorial to Remove Webfetti Using HijackThis

in #utopian-io7 years ago

Webfetti is a free online application that provides a wide-ranging gallery of graphics, layouts, smileys and cursors for social networking websites such as FaceBook. Users can use these to customize their personal pages at these websites. When webfetti is installed, the MyWebSearch toolbar will appear in Internet Explorer

Webfetti is one of the products from the Fun Web software suite. Fun Web Products does claim that their products such as Webfetti store cookies on your PC, are spyware free. They also offer the guarantee that they won't sell your personal information to any third parties. So why un-install them? Well, aside from storing cookies on the computer to track browsing habits, Webfetti tends to drain system resources, affecting the performance of the PC.

How to Uninstall Webfetti

1- Click on the Start button in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. In the Start menu, click on Control Panel (Depending on the version of Windows that is installed on a PC, Control Panel may be located under the settings menu).

2- Click on Ad/Remove Programs. This will open a window listing programs installed on the PC.

3- Locate entries labeled My Web Search or Webfetti in this listing of programs. Click on each entry and then click on Change/Remove to delete the program. Close the window.

4- Download HijackThis, a free anti-spyware program. Read this tutorial for detailed instructions on how to download and use HijackThis to remove adware: How to Remove Malware Using HijackThis

5- With HijackThis installed, restart the computer in Safe Mode. It can be booted into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key on the keyboard while the computer loads.

6- Run HijackThis once the PC is in Safe Mode, so as to scan for webfetti adware and any associated files. Once HijackThis runs its scan, review the the entries listed in the HijackThis log that will open.

7- Delete any entries in the log which contain the term MyWebSearch. It is important not to delete any other entry before determining with certainty that it is malicious, because an important system process or file mayaccidentally be deleted.

8- Close HijackThis and then open My Computer. In the My Computer window, double-click on Drive C. Next, double-click the folder named Program Files.

9- Delete the folders labeled FunWebProducts and MyWebSearch. To do this, simply right-click each folder and select Delete.

10- Download, install and run SpyBot Search and Destroy from this link. This powerful program will help undo any changes Webfetti and MyWebSearch may have made to the computer's registry.

Hi,
I reviewed what you did very carefully, and this is what I noticed:

  • you first forked HiJackThis to https://github.com/dragokas/hijackthis , you are the repo owner
  • I am not sure if the original HiJackThis is open source or closed source, and if it is legal to fork the original repo and then commit new code to your own fork (parts maybe were not Open Source and therefore building on that is not legal, free != open source. But, I am not accusing you right now, but I am not sure either;
  • you already did a tutorial about your HiJackThis 19 days ago: since your program reports application registry components, and it's used to unnstall programs, of course writing multiple tutorials per program to uninstall is nonsense because it is a trivial task. Therefore this tutorial is too similar to your previous tutorial about the same HiJackThis Fork
  • we do however at Utopian also have a rewards system for developing / contributing code to Open Souce repos. That even would pay you far more than writing tutorial posts;
  • but that of course first needs to be legal: you cannot just take another closed-source repo, fork it, and then say it is all open source. But I want to discuss this with you.

Concluding:

  • this tutorial is rejected and don't add new tutorials about the same repo for they are too trivial;
  • contact me on Discord to see how you could or coould not be rewarded for contributing / developing your own repo.
