Description
Learn the function of Valley's Dexter module
Dexter is a VCO, a very interesting and dynamic VCO. Dexter permits Frequency Modulation and Phase Modulation synthesis. This sort of synthesis was made popular in the 1980's with keyboards such as the Yamaha DX7. The DX7 gave us great sounds but programming was notoriously difficult due to the poor interface.
Dexter gives us an easy-to-use interface with allows all sorts of synthesis possibilities.
Get an introduction to Frequency Modulation and Phase Modulation synthesis
Dexter allows FM and PM synthesis. As you will see with the Algorithm, the four operators can be positioned to modulate each other in various configurations. Operators have a range of wave table voicings which can be manipulated in a variety of ways.
Learn how to manipulate the basic functions of the four operators
Each of the four operators have the same controls. We have a Wave dial which allows us to morph through a variety of wave shapes.
The Shape dial acts much like a pulse width modulator.
To alter the frequency on each operator we have a Coarse and Fine adjustments.
The gain of each operator can individually be controlled with the Level dial.
Learn how each operator can affect other operators
Each operator has the ability to modulate other operators. This can be defined with the Algorithm. The waveform from one operator modulates the next operator's waveform in the chain of the Algorithm. This is then passed to the next operator.
Learn the function of the Algorithm
The Algorithm function allows us to choose which operators modulate which other operators. Outputs A and B are also part of the algorithms. There are numerous pattern to choose from.
I hope you enjoy this tutorial. If you have any specific questions for me feel free to leave it in the comments of this post and I will do my best to get back to you with an answer.
