The Window Wash Man (An Original Urban Legend by @matthewtiii)
Monty sped through the light at 17th Street, late for his promotion meeting.
"Damn it!" he chafed. The light at 16th was red already. "Shit! Not today, please!"
He stood at the corner as if waiting for Monty, a smile on his filth ridden face, black holes where some of his teeth should have been. He had a blue scrub bucket in his gloved left hand and a window squeegee in his ungloved right. His frayed grey coat was buttoned all the way up to his scraggly salt and pepper beard. It was freezing in Denver and here he was standing at the ready, waiting to wash car windows.
Monty knew better than to try to avoid the window wash man. He showed up out of the blue and would neither take money nor no for an answer. He never said a word, but he did have a message.
When the window wash man was finished with your window, he left a streak that appeared to be a date, which would disappear after a few seconds. Monty was a little creeped out by the window wash man, but, he figured the guy just had some issues.
Monty had to get to work or he may not get the promotion after all. He rolled his window down, preparing to explain that he didn't have time today. "Hey, buddy," he smiled at the man "how about we do this on my way home? I am so late for work."
But, as Monty knew, no was not an answer this man understood. He rolled his window back up, shutting out the cold. He hoped his "friend" would hurry so he could be on his way. Just before the light turned green for Monty, the man stood back, smiling as always. He waved to the window, proud of his work.
The date was today's. Strange, it had always been a date in 2056 before. Monty shrugged it off and waved back at the man before speeding off through the now green light. He glanced back to see that the window wash man had disappeared. Monty punched the accelerator in his black BMW, hoping to make it to 14th before another red light.
Luck was on his side and he started into the left turn on 14th street, tires complaining shrilly of the speed. As Monty completed the turn, his right front rim caught on the light rail track and the BMW rolled slowly onto it's side. Metal creaked and screeched as the car came to a halt.
"Fuck!" Monty exhaled. He felt a little bruised, but, otherwise he thought he was ok. He began trying to right himself when he realized his seatbelt was tightly wrapped around him. He dropped his hand to the seatbelt lock and pushed.
The seatbelt didn't release. "Shit!"
He pushed it harder, nothing. The windshield, still intact, had todays date written seemingly in frost. Under the date was a number. It looked like the last two numbers of a clock.
:13
"What is this?" a shaky voice warbled. Monty did not realize it was his voice.
:12
A loud horn sounded close.
:11
Oh, God, the train!
:10
Got to get out!
:09
Yanking, pulling, screaming at the release button!
:08
A sharp click as the release finally gives.
:07
Monty hears the horn again. He climbs up through the passenger side window into the freezing air.
:06
He sees the train coming around the corner, almost to the Big Blue Bear in front of the Convention Center.
:05
He sees the face of the engineer, contorted with fear. He hears the screams of people on the street.
:04
Monty leaps toward the side of the road and lands in a heap on the sidewalk.
:03
He rolls onto his back as people come to give him aid. He blacks out and doesn't even hear the crash.
Monty sits at the desk in his new office, thinking the whole incident over. Uncanny, magic, angel are all words that come to mind. He turns in his brown leather chair toward the widow just in time to see the window wash guy, down on the street, washing another window. Just then, the disheveled angel flashes him a knowing smile and waves.
