The Two Worlds We Live Between
When I visit a rural place, it feels so different, as if the whole world has slowed down. I can hear more of the birds and less of honking. We feel so connected with nature and our environment in rural spaces. Automatically we start experiencing peace. If it's raining, we can even get the fragrance of the Earth. We can feel the nature around us. But when we are in an urban place, this connection gets lost. All around us there is a concrete jungle, there is no fragrance of mother Earth, there is no greenery, it all feels disconnected. When I visit my holiday home, I feel this connection of not only seeing nature but also feeling nature on my skin and in my body, and as soon as I am back to the city the vibe changes.
The more and more we develop urban spaces we kind of lose connection with nature. Unless we create nature in those spaces, we do not feel. It all feels very harsh to me. Infrastructure development is important but that comes with a big cost. Cities are where dreams get built, development happens, there is comfort and speed and ample opportunities, but there is a big cost attached to it. Urban life becomes harsh, it's not because people are harsh but it is because we have made our environment harsh. There are constant noise, pollution and concrete stuff all around us.
Having said that, the answer is not going back in time and destroying what we have created, but it is about integration. Bringing more of nature in to our urban spaces. More trees can be planted in the cities. We can create vertical gardens on buildings that will have a soothing visual. Many parks which allow us to walk in nature. Having car free zones, no big banners. Some simple ways but yet very effective for mental well-being. Getting disconnected from nature impacts our mental health in a big way.
Rural spaces remind us of who we are, whereas urban spaces ask us who we want to become. It's not about choosing one and leaving the other. We can integrate the two and come to a healthy solution. Infrastructure development is important and so is experiencing the fragrance of Nature and Mother Earth.
