Before I call it a night
I'm getting ready to call it a night, my mind full of thoughts and honestly I'm feeling a bit exhausted, but not too worry, I have no intentions of slowing down, now is not the time.
With steemfest around the corner and so many projects in the works I frankly feel at times that I should be doing more. So today I've decided to hit the books as they say, and teach myself how to code again, like the good ol days.
As life would have it, the computer where I installed Linux broke on me and now refused to boot, but that is just another bump on the road and nothing more.
I've been advised to start with Python and after looking at some source code I have to say that I agree, it looks a lot cleaner then its competitors by a long shot. Now don't get me wrong, I don't have an expectation of becoming the next amazing developer or anything of the sort. but if there is one thing that this whole experience has taught me is that I need to learn a lot more to be able to contribute to this community and with that motivation I need no other excuses.
Wish me luck, wish me patience because I'm sure I'm going to need both.

I’m also looking to get back into some coding with Python. I started using Beem and it looks fairly easy. I haven’t serious coded for 25 years but it seems much easier than when I wrote sprite games from scratch at age 12!

we almost coincide with the times there my friend, last time i coded anything significant it was in 2000 if I'm not mistaken.
It feels weird that someone has advised you to start with something without knowing your specific goals. Python is easy to read, and if you want to write basic Steem utilities it's great. Make sure you're following @holger80 and @steempytutorials.
It won't be very useful if you want to understand the core blockchain code, though, which is written in C++.
TC, youre proper brainy, always making sensible and astute observations and seem like a decent fella. Why aren't you a witness ? (The answer is NOT because I am all these things!)
I'm not really interested in the specific responsibilities of being a witness. The minute people start talking about "I set an alarm to wake me up when I miss blocks" I head the other direction.

just because i got so into setting up the laptop work environment that 2am came around... but then the laptop broke, so i did a lot of work for nothing apparently

More information is always a good thing meno. I never got into coding, but the wife is starting java script, then on to c++
I think coding is probably the most valuable skill for contributing in depth to the steem project. It gives opportunities to contribute to existing projects, to build out your own ideas, and to better understand what the changes are that are being proposed in each hard fork.
As @tcpolymath points out above, it's worthwhile thinking about what your goals are and which of the above you want to do in making your choice of language.
Many of the dApps use javascript or one of the js libraries (react, vue, quasar etc). Steemit, busy, utopianv2, ulogs, steemhunt all fall into this category.
Steem itself is in C++.
Hivemind is in python and I think there's a huge amount of useful work that will be done here in the (hopefully near) future.
I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. It's also definitely worth popping in to the Utopian discord and chatting with the devs there to see what they think and meeting people on the same path.

Good luck and have some good rest! I have also been looking to learn some more of the technical aspects of coding so I look forward to you sharing your journey. I believe that one must do what you are passionate about and have found myself very submerged here so want to do as much as I can. I also believe that it is always great to acquire knowledge as it is truly the best investment so this can work together to bring great things for the community!
