#ULOG S2018E111: First Calligraphy Commission Project

If it scares you, it is worth doing.

I held into this quote when I accepted the task of writing invitation letters in pointed pen calligraphy. I had a lot of realizations when I was commissioned to do it and I totally believe that I had learned a lot from it.

From not really giving much pressure to myself when I start writing, that I should be relaxed and anxious-free. That I shouldn't think so much about it and that everything's going to be okay afterward which was what happened.

I made pencil marks on the silky and shimmery paper envelope so I make sure to be writing in straight but it took me more hours erasing those pencil alignments. So in the next projects, I will make sure not to write any specific marks in them.

Also, I realized that these tasks, although quite easy since I only had to write, an invitation set of around 50 pieces can be done in less than half a day so it is a simple task but it is very delicate and tender carefulness has to be observed to avoid writing incorrectly or smudging the inks.

Talking about smudging the inks, it is also important to be working in a solemn, very quiet and big area to lay out all the writings on and allow them to dry.

That's it for today!

I did calligraphy years ago, although arthritis in my hands prevents any decent penmanship nowadays, even with regular cursive writing. However, here is a tip for you!

  • Cut a piece of white cardboard the size of your invitations.
  • With a ruler and a very dark pen, make several straight lines across the cardboard where you wish the writing to be.
  • Slip that cardboard into the envelope so that the lines are faintly visible beneath the surface where your writing will be and you have guide-lines that don't require erasing! Simply slip the cardboard out of the envelope when you're done with each one and move to the next envelope!

Your calligraphy is lovely! Great job! Bravo! 😊

Thank you so much for that tip
