Ulog #162: Entitlement and Respect

We are taught to respect the elderlies. Being raised from a family which values respect towards older people, I have deep respect to them. In fact, I always value spending time with the eldrrlies because of their outlook, and maturity.

There are moments when we don't understand them, but we need patience when dealing with them. As they are older than us, they also show good examples for us to imitate. It is sad that some of them are not exemplary with younger generations.

As much as I respect them, but I know how to perceive exemplary elderlies. I was quite disappointed recently while heading to a distant town. A man who is probably at his early 60s, but he looks younger though. He entered the bus, and talked at a high voice nagging at the fare collector.

"Has policies changed?" he exclaimed to the fare collector.

He is pertaining to the front seats which was reserved for persons with disability and the elderlies. Perhaps he is referring to the two women sitting at the front who are with us, as the passengers at the other side are elderlies. The fare collector is explaining but the man keeps nagging.

The two women (at their 30s) doesn't know what he is talking about because they were both deaf and mute. Technically, they deserve to take that seat because they are considered PWDs. Besides, we're riding the bus from its starting point, and at 3/4 of travel to reach our destination. He just got on the bus and he is complaining.

What makes him disappointing?

  • He's been judging on what he sees. The two women may look normal, but they have disability. We, as volunteers, are looking after them.

  • We've been on the bus from the bus terminal. We are the only passengers before it took off.

  • He doesn't have to be nagging. He should say it at the right manner, so it would be explained. How will it know that the two women are PWDs, when at the time he set foot at the bus, he is nagging?

  • He should be showing a good example considering he is older.

  • He is verbally abusive, and a high sense of entitlement.

  • Some older people, even women got on the bus without hearing anything from them.

Next time, it would be better if bus operators will make it clear. Besides, they also have mistakes in handling such issues. They don't even explain to the man exactly what they should be telling him. They're just passive of the man's nagging.
