Ulog 7: My 3 Favorite Histology Specimens

in #ulog5 years ago

First semester is finally over and I think I’d love to share some cool pictures of tissue slides with you. In our histology class, doctors presented to us with various specimens, but these three here are my favorite:

  1. Elastic Cartilage

This one is an elastic cartilage and this can be distinguished from other types of cartilages because of its abundant elastic fibers and large lacunae which surround the chondrocytes.

  2. Fibrocartilage

Here is another type of cartilage where the chondrocytes are arranged in rows and the matrix is found to have obvious coarse collagen (Type 1) fibers.

  3. Cardiac Muscle

This obviously is the muscle that surrounds the heart and I find it just beautiful because of the branchings and the striations. Intercalated disks are found in between each cardiac muscle fiber which happen to have gap junctions or communicating junctions.

That is all for today!!!

P.S these are original photos taken and credits to the professors for the slides!!!
