Trevan House - Weird Architecture

Trevan House - Port Isaac

Continuing my photo story of Port Isaac, Cornwall I thought this cottage was perfect for my entry to @juliank's and @photocontests for this architectural photography contest.

What you need to know when looking at this picture is that the buildings are only about one foot apart. The cottage that is perpendicular in the photograph is built in such a way that it is dissecting the window of the other one.

Trevan House, the building facing you was the original doctors house in Port Isaac village.

I have tried, without success, to discover why the perpendicular house was built so close to Trevan House.

We have a law in the UK called "the right to light" so the cottage must have been constructed before that law came into practice, you would have thought.

Right to light is a form of easement in English law that gives a long-standing owner of a building with windows a right to maintain the level of illumination. It is based on the Ancient Lights law. The rights are most usually acquired under the Prescription Act 1832. ~ Wikipedia

I have searched on Google and read a conservation document which, although mentioning that the facade of Trevan House couldn't be viewed in full due to the other cottage, it give no explanation as to why that was the case.

Very interesting, these buildings remind me very much of White Horse Close in Edinburgh's Old Town. Good luck in the contest :)

Thanks @seanreilly. I dont' think it would remind you of Edinburgh if you saw the rest of the surroundings. 😁

Great pictures as always. And interesting post. I love the "right to light" laws. UK law fascinates me for the common sense origin of many legal traditions that carried through to the US. Living in California don't get me started on easement laws. We have zero lot lines (no easement build right to lot line), courtyard houses (shared driveways), flag lots (you get a driveway through someone else's lot (the flag pole) to your lot, it goes on and on. Ok there is a point to this. Land prices and population density often lead to "relaxation" of easement laws.

It all sounds a bit complicated @steven-patrick but no doubt our law is just the same way.

Glad you enjoyed the post. I'm really enjoying having different and interesting subjects to write about. I'm amazed that I'm fitting it all in but so far, so good! 😊

Aside from any laws that probably didn't exist, and taking in account losing property in a a poker game, this just seems like someone did it out of contempt. "I'll show you! I'm going to build the house perpendicular to yours straight down the middle of your precious window from a foot away!"

The only other things I can think of is that the two parties really liked each other and wanted to be able to safely pass through the windows of one house to the other without using the doors. Very eccentric friends, you might say. :)

I'm sure there's a logical explanation for it all, but I'm not sure what that could be that doesn't involve some level of animus.

I think the gambling explanation it most likely @glenalbrethsen but I find it surprising that I have not been able to find out the truth of it! I will keep trying. 😊

Hmmm. A secret in Cornwall. A secret so dark, no one will admit to it. Or, no one really knows. Except the seagull, but he's too wrapped up in his own thoughts about dinner to pay any attention.

Well, maybe you'll find the right person. Have you knocked on the door of either place yet and asked? That might be a little too direct, but it probably wouldn't be the first time someone has given into curiosity and just asked the owners. Might be interesting to ask both and see if the stories vary. :)

Except the owners don't live there anymore @glenalbrethsen. They are holiday lets these days.

I willing to let it remain a secret in Cornwall. I did my best to find the answer without success so I'll leave it there and let the story tellers of this world, such as yourself, decide! 😁

Such a classic cottage and I love the window frames, you could almost play tic tac to with them :)

You could. But you'd have too many squares @for91days. 😁

Thank you for visiting and for leaving a comment. It's much appreciated.

Tic Tac To 2018! New rules more fun, I guess :)

New rules. I like the sound of that @for91days. Most games I play always end in a draw. 😁
