Randy Couture Has Some Interesting Insight On Conor Mcgregor's Boxing License
Randy "The Natural" Couture, former UFC HW and LHW champion, has long been a supporter of the Ali Act and has tried to transition it to MMA. But what exactly is it?
The Ali Act
Named after the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, the Ali Act is meant to protect the rights of the boxers. It stripped promotions of some of their power and gave it to the boxers. It prevents promotions from having a monopoly on the sport, but perhaps more importantly, it prevents promotions from signing boxers exclusively. A boxer can fight in any promotion whenever he chooses.
This is not the case for MMA fighters, someone signed with the UFC is required by contract to not fight for any other promotion be it MMA or any other combat sport. Randy Couture is one of the many setting out to change that. During this madness with the Mayweather vs Mcgregor fight coming up, Randy made some interesting observations.
The UFC seemed adamantly opposed to Mcgregor going off and fighting Mayweather in a boxing match, and whose to blame them, Mcgregor is after all signed with the UFC and we've just covered their rules on the matter. Well things changed when Mcgregor got a boxing license.
With the boxing license Mcgregor is now eligible for protection under the Ali Act, which overrules any promotional rules including that of the UFC. The UFC had to accept this fight, Mcgregor became a free man when he got the boxing license, and what's more interesting is that Nate Diaz has also been issued a boxing license, no doubt for the same freedom.
