My reflections on memory and soul based on the book 'The Altered Carbon'

I love to read books, especially fiction, especially those works that touch on the subject of human consciousness, soul, life after death (or lack of the latter one). Right now, I'm reading Richard Morgan's book "The Altered Carbon", which describes the world of the future, several centuries after our time (I'll admit right away that I didn't watch this series on Netflix, so my impressions are only related to the book). In this world, humanity seems to have conquered death by learning to record its memory on special chips that are fed to children immediately after birth. If your current body wad die, then human synchronized memory is written to another body (your clone if you are rich or cheap synthetic shell if you are poor).

Humans have colonized other planets, but they exist quite independently (albeit under the UN Protectorate), because humanity has not been able to overcome the speed of light, and without it, ships reach the nearest stars for decades. However, there are technologies that can transmit human consciousness (through the so-called Breakthrough) to other planets that are implanted into another body there. This is the way the UN controls other planets and suppresses local wars there. There is a special kind of troops that train not their body but their mind, which is why they are so resistant to transmitting consciousness in space. Such a soldier is the protagonist of this novel, Takeshi Kovacs (he was born on a planet colonized by the Japanese and Slavic peoples), but I will not concentrate on it now and will not discuss the events of this novel.

I want to focus on the very way of copying human memory. In the future, most believe (including the authorities) that a person's personality is a continuous memory of a person from birth. This memory can be rewritten to another body and is a common practice. Destruction of the body is no longer considered murder, only the destruction of consciousness scares most people. However, a small group of people (these are Catholics) do not consider the memory of a person and their soul to be equivalent, so they do not want their memory to be copied to another body after death or stored in any digital form.

Frankly, I don't know if I would choose oblivion, knowing that my memory could be rewritten to another body. But I am terrified that it would still be not me, just another person with my memory. This is all very difficult, given the fact that your memory can be written to two or more bodies at once. Then who are these people? Which one is my soul? Does the soul of a person go to another dimension at the moment of death of a physical body (paradise, hell?), And my memory in another body forms a completely different soul? (so, by the way, another science fiction writer, Peter Hamilton, describes similar memory copying technologies, but I like his future better).

Now I am constantly thinking about what I read in this book, I am thinking with Richard Morgan and thinking about my own variants of what is human being, its soul, and is it enough to simply copy the memory for eternal life?

Я люблю читати книги, особливо фантастику, особливо ті твори, які зачіпають тему людської свідомості, душі, життя після смерті (чи взагалі відсутності останньої як факту). Зараз я читаю книгу Річарда Морґана «Зінакшений вуглець», в якому описується світ майбутнього, через декілька століть після нашої епохи (я зразу зізнаюся, що я не дивилася цього серіалу на Netflix, то ж мої враження пов’язані лише з книгою). У цьому світі людство начебто перемогло смерть, навчившись записувати свою пам’ять на спеціальні чіпи, які вживлюються дітям одразу ж після народження. Якщо твоє теперішнє тіло, то синхронізована пам’ять людини записується в інше тіло (ваш клон, якщо ви багаті чи дешеву синтетичну оболонку, якщо ви бідняк).

Люди колонізували інші планети, проте вони існують цілком автономно (хоча і під Протекторатом ООН), бо людство не змогло подолати швидкість світла, а без цього кораблі добираються десятки років до найближчих зірок. Проте існують технології, які можуть пересилати на інші планети людську свідомість (за допомогою так званого Пробою), яка імплантується в інше тіло. Саме таким чином ООН контролює інші планети і придушує там локальні війни. Існує спеціальний вид військ, які тренують не своє тіло, а свій розум, і тому вони такі стійкі до пересилання свідомості у космосі. Саме таким солдатом є головний герой цього роману, Такеші Ковач (він народився на планеті, яку колонізували японці та слов’янські народи), але я не концентруватимусь на ньому зараз і не обговорюватиму події цього роману.

Я хочу зосередити свою увагу на самому способі копіювання людської пам’яті. У майбутньому більшість вважає (серед них і влада), що особистість людини – це безперервна пам’ять людини від її народження. Цю пам’ять можна переписати в інше тіло, і це поширена практика. Знищення тіла не вважається більше вбивством, лише знищення свідомості лякає більшість людей. Проте невелика група людей (це католики) не вважає рівноцінною пам’ять людини та її душу, тому вони не бажають, щоб їхню пам’ять після смерті переписували в інше тіло чи зберігали в будь-якому цифровому вигляді.

Я, чесно кажучи, не знаю, чи я обрала би забуття, знаючи, що мою пам’ять можна буде переписати в інше тіло. Але мене лякає думка про те, що це була б все одно не я, просто інша людина з моєю пам’яттю. Це все дуже складно, враховуючи той факт, що твою пам’ять можна записати одразу у два чи більше тіл. Тоді хто з цих людей справжня я? Кому з них належить моя душа? Чи в момент смерті фізичного тіла душа людини відправляється кудись в інший вимір (рай, пекло?), а моя пам’ять в іншому тілі утворює зовсім іншу душу? (так до речі вважає інший фантаст, Пітер Гамільтон, який описує схожі технології копіювання пам’яті, але його майбутнє мені більше до вподоби).

Зараз я постійно обдумую, те що я прочитала у цій книжці, я подумки полемізую з Річардом Морґаном та обдумую свої варіанти того, що є сутністю людини, її душею, і чи достатньо простого копіювання пам’яті для вічного життя? А ви, друзі, колись замислювалися над подібними питаннями? Чи ви сліпо приймаєте точку зору якоїсь з релігій, чи може маєте якусь власну версію?
