Steemit, Three Dangers of Commenting on a Post Without Reading It

He who comments on a post without reading it is like a man who ejaculates before undressing a woman.

  • Aristotle.

There is a growing trend I have recently observed on Steemit. It appears that there is a growing number of Steemians who make meaningless and unrelated comments on quality trending posts. Although I can't categorically say the motivations behind such actions, I suspect the commenters do so for two major reasons. First, because they want to harvest upvotes. Second, because they want to be noticed.

Frankly speaking, there is nothing wrong in wanting to be noticed or upvoted. In fact, everyone here, including this writer, wants to be noticed and upvoted. Nevertheless, in fighting for upvotes and attention, we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. We must play according to the rules of the game without trying to adjust the goalpost.

Every good writer who devotes valuable time into writing a quality post would, naturally, want a decent feedback on their work. It is therefore silly, permit me to say, when a random person jumps on the post and comment without reading it, adding zero value to the conversation. It turns out that the writer's efforts are trivialized and he is frustrated, somehow.

Shifting attention to the commenter now, here are some of the dangers of commenting on a post without reading it:

1. You're Perceived as Unintelligent

When you comment on a post without thoroughly reading it, chances are high that your comment will be meaningless. And if you succeed in making meaningless comments, other readers will perceive you as being unintelligent.

2. Your Chances of Being Followed is Ruined

In case you don't know it, several Steemians have the habit of coming to the comment section to read thrilling comments and follow intelligent commenters. When your comment is sloppy, your chances of being followed is ruined because nobody wants to follow a dummy.

3. You May be Downvoted

If your comment is annoying enough, you might be downvoted by the author. And a downvote means a cut of your reputation, especially when the downvoter is a whale and you are not.

Having point out three key dangers of commenting on a post without reading it, I will admonish every Steemian to always read a post thoroughly before making comments. This way, value will be added to the Steemit community and authors will be rewarded duely for the valuable time they put into writing quality post.

He who comments on a post without reading it is like a man who ejaculates before undressing a woman.

  • Aristotle.

P.s: So you really think Aristotle said the above words? You must be a comedian. LOL

Thanks for your reading time, you're appreciated. Kindly Upvote and Resteem.

Very well said @gandhibaba. It doesn't take much to make a decent comment. If you cannot come up with something contributory to show that you did take the time to read the post then at least upvote it if you like it, imo.

If you're going to post something to the effect of 'Good post. you follow.' I can guarantee I will not follow you. I personally want the interaction.

I do think art is one of the hardest to comment on. Unless it utterly moves you, pretty much the only thing you can say is nice picture, beautiful use of color and to me that's almost as bad as 'Good post, you follow."

Commenting and getting involved with others is essential to growth on this platform. Plus how else are you going to meet people, if you don't talk to them?

Thanks for making such a lengthy yet priceless contribution to this conversation. I like the fact that you always take your time to give a honest and sincere opinion on any post. I really envy and admire that.

I also like the fact that you tried to educate everyone of us on the importance of making good comments. Thank you.

P.s: kindly follow @majesty.tytyty and @taskmaster4450 they appreciate valuable comments a lot.

Regards.

You do a great job of that yourself @gandhibaba. In fact, that was one of the reasons I chose to follow you. You don't respond with 'K thx, bye' Your words are genuine.

With my response, I want the person who wrote it to know I did read this and always try to work in a reminder of a sort to back up what you or someone else is saying. It helps me too, mainly to keep in mind my goals.

Will do. If they're as good as you say they are, it should be fun :)

Are you sure Aristotle said those things?

Certainly not. Just to catch readers' attention.

Hi buddy, you mind telling me what's your name? Im Piotr (which is easy to guess haha)

I really love reading your posts. Very easy and informative. Keep up with great content. Steemit needs people like you.

You just wrote:
"Frankly speaking, there is nothing wrong in wanting to be noticed or upvoted"

I agree. We all want to benefit one way or the other on Steemit and to do so - we need to be noticed first. To build follower base, to attract people to engage etc.
The problem is that most people have no idea how to do it right.

Take me for example. I'm a social media marketer. What I do is simple.
I look for some topic that I like to read about. I would find 30-50 posts about the same issue on steemit. I would look briefly at all of them and read the ones that I attract most of my attention.
And then I would think of some questions that I like to ask. I would write those questions down, create "general" comment related to topic filled in with my questin.
And only then post it to each of those 30-50 people as a comment.

Does it look like spam? A little bit. But Im reaching those who are interested with topic. Im asking genuine questions and if someone reply - then Im gonna do my best to keep in touch.
I may not read fully each post that Im starting to comment, but once I get reply ... then I read it again. From A to Z. Fair enough?

So at the end of the day I may have little followers but my engagement rate is very high.

Most people think that following 10k people and leaving simple comments will help them. But it's just not good enough.

Cheers,
Piotr

ps.
I would love to stay in touch with you a little bit closer as I value your knowledge and your input. And we could support each other on Steemit.
I wish there would be more advanced notification system developed by steemit.

Plus you're very responsive which is absolutely great and steemit community surely will benefit by having you here.

Perhaps you could send me short email to [email protected]

No pressure of course,

Cheers, Piotr

I will send you a mail and we can probably, if you please, exchange contacts on Whatsapp, etc.

Unfortunatelly I dont use Discord/whatsapp etc. Im more of an email guy. About 3 years ago I realized that I spent to much time online so I got rid of my cellphone. Now once I close my laptop - Im 100% offline. Amazing feeling :)

That's weird yet strategic. Well, we can communicate via mail then.

plus different time zone would be an issue as well
thx for understanding :)

My partner keep telling me that Im the weirdest person she ever knew, but yet she love me :)

Hahaha that's funny, friend, but true. You have a lovable personality.

Damn. Tell it to my girlfriend. She keep saying that Im like a robot hahaha :)
(on top of being weird).
And apparently polish sense of humour is the worst in the world (also according to her).

Also would you mind checking my last post and sharing your opinion in regard to asked quetion: "Will crypto and blockchain divide humanity?". Im very curious what's your view on that issue.

Cheers, Piotr

Thanks for the invaluable contribution you have made to this post. You brought a fresh insight, like writing down a question before posting it. I find it very useful and would adopt it immediately, so that I can engage and interact more just like you do.

My name is David, presently living and working in Nigeria. It is a great pleasure meeting you.

All pleasure is mind David.
