Trump to ban oil imports?
There's reports this morning that Trump and the Republicans in Congress are thinking of banning oil imports (or at least imposing killer tariffs on imported oil - do they realise there are several very different kinds of crude?) and in particular blocking some very large imports from Saudi. The aim is to support domestic oil prices and producers.
Economically nuts in either the short or long terms but makes sense for them politically and plays into the economic nationalism narrative that is gaining ground all the time in the Republican Party. Geopolitically though this could be very significant, not least because of the implied rupture in the eighty year old alliance between the US and the House of Saud.
Petrol is at prices last seen in the 1980s and the US President wants to make it more expensive in a nation still wedded to the internal combustion engine while trying to kick start the economy.
