Photo Nature #5: Gaviota en Laguna Rosales / Seagull in Rosales Lagoon, Patagonia, Argentina

Muy cerca de San Martín de los Andes existe una pequeña laguna donde anidan cientos de aves durante la primavera y verano, una de las especies más numerosas son las Gaviotas Capucho Café (Larus maculipennis). Es bastante impresionante caminar cerca de la orilla en la zona de nidos, las gaviotas literalmente despegan como una flota de aviones caza dispuestos a hacer retroceder al invasor, y se lanzan como kamikazees sobre nosotros gritando como si rugieran las turbinas, apuntando directo a nuestras cabezas a gran velocidad. En los últimos dos o tres metros antes de alcanzarnos, hacen una maniobra rápida, giran y se elevan para volver a "atacar", pero inmediatamente detras de la que acaba de retirarse viene otra, y otra, y decenas de gaviotas nos apuntan gritando y advirtiendo que en esa zona hay que tener mucho cuidado, porque las gaviotas están cuidando algo muy importante para ellas.

Very close to San Martin de los Andes there is a small lagoon where hundreds of birds nest during the spring and summer, one of the most numerous species are the Capucho Café Seagulls (Larus maculipennis). It is quite impressive to walk near the shore in the nesting area, the gulls literally take off like a fleet of fighter planes ready to push back the invader, and they throw themselves like kamikazees on us screaming as if the turbines roared, aiming directly at our heads at high speed. In the last two or three meters before reaching us, they make a quick maneuver, turn and rise to return to "attack", but immediately behind the one that has just retired comes another, and another, and dozens of seagulls point at us screaming and warning that in that area you have to be very careful, because the seagulls are taking care of something very important for them.
