My Tree Tuesday post starts out with this big old oak tree that has been growing for over a 100 years in a patch of woods near my house.
Would you recognize that big old vine growing up the tree as poison ivy?
Leaflets three , let it be.
Hairy vine, a danger sign.
This vine is so old and woody it is not hairy until it gets much higher up in the tree.
The Mayapples are blooming right now.
But if you were trying to take a photo of the blossoms, would you recognize where the poison ivy is, and avoid contact?
The oil that is in the leaves, stems and roots of poison ivy can cause a nasty rash in people who are allergic to it.
Wash your skin right away if you come into contact with this oil. Washing off the oil may reduce your chances of getting a poison ivy rash. If you develop a rash, it can be very itchy and last for weeks.
It is flourishing nicely in this cool wet spring weather we are having. I am so glad I am not allergic to it, but a couple of my grandkids are. Nasty stuff.

You are lucky! This one is native, but we have so many poisonous invasive plants spreading into our area, that this one seems the least of our worries these days! Poison Hemlock, wild parsnip, and although not poisonous, garlic mustard, are all crowding out the plants that our native animals and insects need to live.
That's a shame @melinda010100. Are there any local initiatives to deal with the problem?
Some volunteer efforts that I know of. My elderly neighbor ended up in the hospital for a week after helping pull wild parsnip from along a hiking trail....and she had been wearing a hazmat suit!

Is wild parsnip edible? Is it the leaves that are the problem or all of the plant?
It is a fairly new invasive for us. It is also called poison parsnip and Giant Hogweed and it does have an edible root but toxic sap in the leaves and stems. It causes severe burns . The plants can grow 4 ft tall and it looks rather like yellow Queen Anne's.lace when it blooms.
I should have recognized it as poison ivy because I am allergic to it. lol

I love every one of these big old oaks in my neighborhood! Keep your fingers crossed that this one stands strong...It could hit the house if it fell!

Very good post @melinda010100 A wonderful reminder of this what could be a very nasty experience with the old Ivy. I dont think I am allergic to it either as I never had a rash and I am sure I have been around it.
My grandson has gotten it while playing in my woods during the winter! I feel so bad for him.

Most likely it is over 100 years old. Maybe 150 years.

I wouldn't have recognized it. I should know it bc I lived in Northern Ontario quite a bit as a child. But I have forgotten how to identify the plant....I liked your little rhyme for it.
I remember my mom broke out in a rash from poison oak....what a mess.
Jim used to end up with a rash every year from working out in the yard. We always had Calamine lotion on hand for him.
My mom's rash was huge and blistery. She had some kind of prescribed cream for it. Nasty. I get an awful rash from dogwood after pruning the bush. Also from everygreen trees. I haven't had calamine lotion in the house in years. Maybe I should get some again. I use aloe a lot on bites and sunburns and cuts and well, lots of stuff. I even used it as a moisturizer when I ran out of my usual stuff.
I'm tired and chatty. lol
I like aloe, too. It's my go-to face moisturizer. Yep...evergreens. I get a red rash all over my arms from them. Chatty is nice!
