White Tree Trunks in China

Trees with the lower portion of the trunk painted white are a pretty common site in China. I think it is primarily done to prevent insect infestation, but I have also heard that it prevents damage to the bark from sunlight and increases visibility along roadways. I’m not really sure, but I think tradition plays a big role in the practice too.

These shots were all taken in Songshan Lake Park, Dongguan with an iPhone 5s (a loaner travel phone from work). I just booked a flight this morning, and will be back to this part of China next month, so I’ll have new photos from the area to share soon.

That's quite intriguing for sure, like you say it's possible they serve multiple purposes. I've seen trees and posts etc. here in the UK painted white or yellow mostley for added visability. Very good captures :)

Thanks. I've seen a few painted trees in the US too, but nothing like in China. It is pretty striking when you see rows and rows of trees with this same white paint treatment.

It's certainly curious, but a little mystery always keeps life interesting :)

Beautiful pictures. I have heard of gardeners painting a sticky tar like substance on the trunks to prevent insects, especially the beginning of spring and end of summer. I have never seen the white painted trunks, though. Very curious. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks! It is curious. Whatever the real reason though, it is interesting to see whole rows of them like this.

Those trees are so pretty! Their unique shapes! I’ve seen trees painted like that and was told it’s to protect for insects. Great pics thanks for sharing!

Thanks. I love some of the twisted roots and branches that you see on trees in southern China. They definitely are unique.

So beautiful shots! So paceful indeed.

Thank you for sharing!

These are very cool!

I love how you can hardly notice the paint on the last tree :)

Yeah, it is definitely a bit worn. That tree has bigger problems than faded paint though. The hole is interesting, but it can't be good for it.

looks like a healthy tree to me! It just has 2 legs to stand on instead of 1 ;)

Ha...and it's waving around like it doesn't care what the other trees think.

awww.... bless him. You always need one of those!!

I've seen this in lots of places and always wondered why it was done but never took time to look it up. Guatemala had tons of trees painted like that. Thanks

Interesting. I have never been to Guatemala, but I'd like to visit someday.

It's an incredibly beautiful country. We lived there for 6 months and loved it. Antigua and Lake Atitlan are the top spots for sure if you are interested. I assume they were painting their tree trucks white for the same reasons as in China.

Thanks. The architecture in Antigua looks amazing, and the volcanos makes a pretty dramatic backdrop. Same for the lake. I can see why you loved it there.

Wow seeing the white trunk brought back a cool childhood memory! Mu uncle had a cherry tree that he always painted white at the trunk!

That is pretty cool. Was this in Michigan? According to fruitgrowersnews.com:

"Painting fruit tree trunks with white latex paint can prevent the bark from splitting and cracking off. Splitting can happen when the tree is exposed to freezing evening temperatures, followed by a daytime thawing. The painted white trunk will help reflect sunlight during the daytime hours and keep the tree warmer at night."

That freeze/ thaw cycle in the spring definitely seems like a likely scenario up there.

There you go. He must of known a thing or two! Thanks!

In Russia, they would paint trees white as well! To prevent insects and alike!

Interesting...and I would imagine that keeping the trees warmer would be a reason for it there too.
