Travel Tip: Znojmo, enchanting historic town surrounded by vineyards

Dear Steemit friends and followers,

Welcome to my Travel Tip series where I promote some of the most beautiful places, interesting landmarks and impressive architectural sites of my homeland, the Czech Republic.

Today, I will take you to one of the most beautiful Moravian towns, the picturesque town of Znojmo.

Located in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic, very close to the Czech-Austrian border, Znojmo has always been one of the historic and cultural centers of the area.

Currently home to some 34,000 people, the town is perched on a rocky promontory above the River Thaya. The town was officially founded in 1226 but it was as early as in the 9th century, during the Great Moravian Empire, that a huge fortress, later known as the Znojmo Castle, was built on the site.

The Znojmo Castle is the dominant feature of the town but throughout the long and rich history of the town, many other important buildings and landmarks were built here, including the Gothic Church of St. Nicholas, the Late Gothic Town Hall Tower, the Romanesque Rotunda of Saint Catherine or the famous Znojmo Catacombs.

Znojmo is not just about impressive architecture though. One of the most important centers of winemaking in the Czech Republic, the town is surrounded by numerous picturesque vineyards. Visitors can also head out to the Palava Natural Reserve or make a day trip to Vienna, the capital of Austria, that is just about 1.5-hour drive away.

Just did a little map searching. The town is quite near to Vienna and to Bratislava (Slovakia). I always have to check out the map - I am bit of a geography nut :-)

Great job! Absolutely, very close! Great for a day trip to Vienna out of Znojmo or vice versa....

Yes I remember reading about this place, but I unfortunately never made it there when I was in the Czech Republic. How much time do you recommend someone to spend in Znojmo itself?

Oh, it really depends what one wants to do. To explore the town does not take long at all, one day will do. However, you can spend the whole week exploring the South Moravian region which is beautiful. We go there with my friends at leas twice a year for cycling.
