around dalmatia #7.jpg

Here I am again with part 7 of my travel series we are still around on the Krka river in beautiful Dalmatia. It is winter time as you all well know but the winters here in the Mediterranean are bearable mild perfect weather and not too many people to get in your way. Exploring the hinterland is m way to bring you a little closer to some spots in Croatia that are off the beaten track and not very often noticed.

If you see my posts for the first time you should check out my previous ones Manojlovac waterfall and the abandoned watermill right on Bilušić waterfall.

Ponds and creeks are knitted all around the mill.

In part #7 we are still around Bilušić waterfall known in Croatia as Bilušića buk one of the seven major waterfalls on the Krka river. The word Buk means waterfall another word is Slap with the same meaning. The literal translation of the word Buk is noise, roar, racket you get the drift if you stand close to a waterfall you can hear it pretty loud and clear.

Chiling in front of the watermill 😎

The entire area is retaken by nature overgrown stone walls it winter now but you can imagine how it would look during spring or summer. You can walk down to Bilušića waterfall from both sides of the Krka canyon. From northern side, where we went down to the waterfall a steep path leads you down to the watermill. What will surely catch your attention are the enormous deposits of travertine of tuffa surrounding the area of the mill and waterfall.

Bilušić Waterfall is the first of the seven on the Krka river at an altitude of 214 meters above sea level. The flow of Bilušić waterfall has been changed during the past on several occasions in 1834, 1895, 1953 and 1954 dynamite explosive was used to stop over flooding of the surrounding area. Bilušić is made out of 100 meters wide, 23 meters high and a total length of 300 meters, pretty impressive I would say. The entire waterfall is formed out of travertine and tufa forming smaller caves and tunnels around the base of the waterfall. So-called dead travertine can be seen to which gives you an idea how long nature took to make this magnificent creation.

Dead travertine formations on the left and a photo of the overgrown dry stone wall on the right.

The most interesting natural phenomenon found in the area around the waterfall are so-called vljavicce or natural washing holes. One could even say preindustrial natural washing machines, how does it work you ask? Well through natural holes in the travertine formation the water is moved around by centrifugal forces causing it to spin around mimicking a washing pattern. Pretty cool right 😊 most of such holes were even used for washing clothes.

Wooden stairs taking you down to the base of the waterfall.

Several new wooden pathways built by the Park Department to get easier access to the base of the waterfall. The boardwalk will take down to the base of Bilušić waterfall through wooden stairs and you will pass the massive deposits of dead travertine. At the and of the stairs one can see the massive hole in the rock which was reshaped into two squares to divert the water. The alterations were made by the people and are not natural. We dared to take a look inside by squeezing through one of the holes.

On the left two holes and on the right a look inside.

A few shots of the overgrown drystone walls around the waterfall.

As soon as you step down from the stairs you will see the amazing view of Bilušić waterfall in front of you. The only thing wrong here is the number of plastic bottles peeking through the driftwood. But I am sure that the crews responsible for cleaning did not get a chance to get here after the heavy rainfall the day before.

I like how your post takes me inside of it :) Pictures are amazing and I can almost feel like I am there. Thank you for promoting our country in this way. 💚

The place is gorgeous perfect for a photoshoot. I bet I'd spend the whole day here just enjoying the view and taking shots the whole day. What is the weather there like?

And you could spend the whole day here and you wouldn't see all of it :-) It is Winter now here in Croatia but it is alright, no snow but strong winds, I think it was 13 degrees Celsius when we visited.
