Good question. Most people would probably tell you it's not safe. However, in our experience (30,000 km, 500 vehicles, 20 countries (including Myanmar,and India)) it has been incredibly safe and without problems! People are just people and the chances of someone out there looking for hitchhikers to pick up and do bad stuff with are incredibly slim.
