An abandoned tunnel in Kovachevitsa, Bulgaria ("Secret Object A")

in #travelfeed6 years ago

Today with friends we made a pedestrian trip in the vicinity the village Kosharitsa. There, in the beginning of the 1950s, the construction of an object under the name "Object A" began in absolute secrecy.

Before we got to the place we walked about 6 km through the old path and we crossed little river.

There were frozen puddles and beautiful ice shapes along the way.

Soon we came to the abandoned tunnel.

This is a project for a railway line linking the two biggest Black Sea towns in Bulgaria - Varna and Bourgas.

The transport project was conceived as part of a strategic railway highway starting from the remote Odessa military district and reaching the Bulgarian-Turkish border.

The beginning of the 1950-s was a time of total opposition between the Eastern Bloc and the West, the world was at the brink of a new war.

The aim of the military-strategic objective is to ensure a faster movement of Soviet troops from Northern to Southern Bulgaria in the event of a military conflict with Turkey.

The site is implemented in absolute secrecy under the name "Object A". It was built in the mid-1950s when, as a result of a change in the political environment on a global scale, the construction was discontinued, the constructed facilities were abandoned. And the route of the line was almost ready. More than half of the earthworks have been realized and the artificial facilities have been almost completed.

The specific reasons for the suspension of the half-finished so-called Black Sea railway are not known to this day.

Well-prepared - with rubber boots and headboards, we entered the tunnel. Its beginning was full of water.

We saw wintering ladybirds.

And several types of bats.

@outlinez make nice pictures inside the tunnel that can be seen here.

As we went out, I climbed up the steep stairs.

At the top I found a unique carpet of moss and a beautiful view.

We set a fire and after a short break we went back.

These are Asha and Karaman (Basenji breed), that were with us during the trip 💗

At sunset we went back.
