Wild Wednesday's: Memories of Madagascar Part 7

in #travelfeed7 years ago

Hello Steemians!

How's everyone doing today? All good we hope! Are you ready for another Wild Wednesday's post?
Today it is me, Becca, writing again, and I will be finishing off my series about my memories in Madagascar while I was volunteering with ReefDoctor.

On the minivan, leaving ReefDoctor with lots of good happy memories

Last week's post I wrote about the tasks we carried out with fish identification for the surveys and the times we spent under the sea. These tasks that involved scuba diving, happened almost on a daily basis, or at least 5 times a week. Towards the end of my time with ReefDoctor, a group of us (6 of us) had saved up on our days off and planned to use them all together, so taking just over a week off from ReefDoctor. We wanted to see another part of Madagascar and decided to go on a hike/trek to a National Park.

At the beginning of our hike through the National Park

Isalo National Park

Isalo National Park is a large natural park with many natural pools, impressive big rock formations and local indigenous wildlife. Something we all wanted to see while we were in Madagascar. The park is inland from Toliara, so it was also nice to not constantly be walking in sand as well.
We got in touch with a local guide through ReefDoctor (as they were the ones who suggested us to go to Isalo in the first place) before we left camp. After an early morning start, we were on our way to Isalo in the local taxi system - a big truck with seating at the back which was packed with people and animals. The minute I sat down I had a little baby girl placed on my lap while her mother sat in the row in front holding all her bags and baskets and chickens. It was a hectic start! From Toliara we got on another packed mini van that drove us to a small town near Isalo National Park, where we would stay the night.

The Trek

Our trek was not that long overall, we broke it nicely over the course of 3 days. Starting early one morning and camping two nights in the Park, and then hiking for most of the last day until we got back to the same town we first arrived at.

Meet the wildlife moment. The ring tailed Lemur. The first group we saw on our first day of hiking! They were climbing all over and amongst the giant rocks

Can you spot the Lemur?!

One of the many natural swimming pools in the park. After a long hot morning of hiking, we walked down into this cool paradise, Oasis! We swam and jumped into the water to refresh ourselves before hiking back up the "valley"

We were hiking on the top of these "hills", where it was hot and dry, but often we would walk down into the green parts of the "valley" where we would find small Oasis of cool refreshing pools

I was the only one brave enough to swim in this natural pool, called the Black Pool. It was so deep hence why it looks black, and it was freezing cold

In between hills. See how steep they are! Once you get down you have to get back out!

Hiking our way out from the Oasis after a refreshing dip in the pool

Look who we found. The Brown Lemur. He was chilling out near our first night camp spot. So beautiful!

Our last night camp spot. On our last day of hiking, we finished our trip at this small village just near or on the border to the park. We were welcomed that night by food and dances and music from the villagers which was quite spectacular. You should have seen how they made their musical instruments! I was unfortunately quite ill on my last night here in the village, hence no photos, and went to bed early due to no energy to stay up

I really hope you have enjoyed reading about my trip in Madagascar and what I got up to while I was there. I loved every bit of it and would love to go back one day. I know that ReefDoctor has gone through a lot of changes since I was there 8 years ago. I believe it is a good thing to get involved in projects like the ones they do and you get to be completely immersed in the local culture and experience a whole lot of new things. It was a great opportunity and I definitely recommend doing something like this when you can!

Stay Classy Steemians!

Heard so many great things about this place! Also, the concept of your blog is quite interesting and unique, and I wish you guys all the best in future!

Thank you @alexcote for your support! Means a lot from a top travel blogger. We wish you all the best too and hopefully you'll get the chance to travel to Madagascar one day 😊

Always excited to read your travelling story, as I am a traveling addicted 😅
That was totally happy and hard moment to past. Through this writing I can feel how frightened were you when you met the Lemur or how excited it was when you drop yourself into that natural swimming pool. I guess I might be the one who brave to do so if I were at your condition. No word to describe how fresh Swimming in the nature was .
You girl got an unforgettable experience during the ReefDoctor trip.
Waiting for most post❤️❤️❤️

That's great to hear @fitrianizar! Are you a travel writer/blogger too?
We can see you're based in Indonesia, which we haven't been to, but we have heard of it's natural beauties!
The Lemur are quite harmless and they are more scared of humans. The natural swimming pools were lovely and refreshing! Although, that black pool was cold. No one else came in as they couldn't see the bottom, so they did not trust the water. They have been watching too many horror movies about snakes and man-eating fish in the water!
It was an incredible and unforgettable experience and would love to see how far ReefDoctor has progressed. Maybe in the future, we will get the chance to see.
This was the last post for our Madagascar, but there will be more destinations - still writing about Ethiopia (got two more parts) and we need to start writing about our recent trip to Singapore! :)

Thanks for the love and support! Appreciate it to the max!

Yaa most people too afraid to dare themselves in a place that they have no idea about it, and it's quite make sense, nobody knows what's inside, but the brave one care nothing about it just like you and me did 😆
I'm a tourism Ambassador of Aceh, one of province in the western tip of Indonesia, if you love traveling I really suggest you to come here, we have wonderful Bali, Lombok, Raja Ampat, Tapaktuan, Sabang Island and so forth. I can guide you though 😇
Unfortunately I'm a new comer in this cool platform, so I didn't write much yet due to some hectic responsibilities to be done recently.
That's why I need your help too to vote my post sometime, ahahaha helping each other.
You can follow me to know more about Aceh.
I already followed you❤️❤️❤️
Keep sharing!
Even the Madagascar episode is about to be end💪

We would love to visit Bali, but often find we don't have enough time to make the visit there worth it. It takes a day from Bangkok as there is no direct flight and it's also getting quite expensive.
Hopefully, you find the time to write some original travel related content, even if it's just supporting tourism in Indonesia. We shall follow you now and look out for great posts you do and help you grow where we can. 😊

Waiting for you to visit Indonesia whenever you have the chance.
Do you have Instagram account? Would be glad to see your adventure more there.
You can check mine @fitrianizar_ah ❤️

We created an Instagram account for our profile - @travelling.two as our Steemit name was taken. We haven't posted anything yet. We were meaning to do some stories and photos on it when we went to Singapore, but we didn't. Got to get use to managing different social media accounts. LOL it's a task! Thanks for yours and we'll be sure to add it.

Yaaaa, in this digital era we have to challenge ourselves to be able to manage ton of social medias. Working together with your partner, Sam, would be a great idea I think. I'm sure with that proficient
skill in writing your reader would love to see more photos collection on your instagram to see your travelling journey. Then you can also promote your steemit account there.
I do challenge myself too to post on steemit, twitter, fb, blog n so on ahahahahah, Am I tired? YES definitely. But recently the world of social media is too selfish to share hate speech and hoax , so why don't we just learning to take the advantages from all of this in positive way, positive content and delivering a positive message.
Waiting for your posts on Instagram :D

This is why we have one account when it comes to Steemit and we have been asked why don't we setup our own individual ones and gain more STEEM that way. It's not the way we think and personally, it's hard to manage on Steemit account, so imagine three!
Yes, in this digital age, everyone has to learn how to do everything digital from marketing to branding. We're not full-time digital nomads, we're just two people lucky enough to go on trips monthly or at least every other month. We just want to document our time in each place and give our personal views and experiences. It does mean we have to broaden our social media spectrum to cast the net wider to attract viewers and followers. We've never been a Tweeter and we're probably slowly moving away from Facebook, although traffic is still good there. Thus, we only setup an Instagram account to assist this Steemit blog. Regarding creating our own personal blog, well, we will have to look into it, but it does cost to buy a domain name.

That's what we're all about - promoting positivity in our posts and comments.

Hopefully, we'll post a photo soon! :D

Wow, Madagascar looks incredible - that natural pool! Also Reefdoctors sounds like the dream, really need to look that up. I think I had seen similar marine conservation volunteer programmes in Mozambique?

Madagascar was incredible! Any natural water source with enough water to cover our bodies and we'll be in it. The expression 'Chasing waterfalls' is in our nature.
ReefDoctor's experience was amazing and very broad in what us volunteers could do. There are plenty of marine conservation volunteer programs all over the continent of Africa (in a country near the sea or lake) as well as over the world. Becca volunteered at another conservation program, but more to do with wildlife tourism conservation in Mozambique. She'll write her post about that in the near future!
If you haven't tried it before, we would recommend volunteer holidays. Try it out for a week or two, just to test how you feel about it. Becca has a friend going from South Asia to North Asia hitchhiking starting from Indonesia going to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, etc. and will continue until he gets to north east part of Russia. He is volunteering at wildlife conservation centres as a) a way of giving back, b) means of accommodation and c) to raise awareness. Now, he is in southern Thailand (somewhere). We really should get him on here, so he could collect STEEM for his cause.

Haha, we have that in common! Get me in any body of water as that's when i'm at my happiest! (Not so sure Aleks feels the same way :P) Though I worry a little about getting in the water in certain places. I'm planning on going to South America soon, and I'd be so much more wary as they have piranhas and parasites and crazy shit down there from the freak stories i've read.

I have always wanted to do volunteering, especially conservation projects, but have never found the time to go and do it. That sounds incredible though, I can't wait to read your posts about this. Seems like a much more worthy way to spend time while in another country by helping our earth in some way.

Woah that friend seems like a legend! Hitchhiking from Asia to Russia?! I cannot even fathom. I hitchhiked once from London to Romania and... it was a very tiring experience to say the least. I think I prefer taking the quick way 🙈 But you should get him on here, he sure sounds like he's got stories to tell (and STEEM to collect for his cause!)!

Ah the horror stories from trips aboard! It is a reality, but we're sure you'll be fine. Just don't be the only one in there...then you'll know it's not safe and next thing you know, you're an Anaconda's afternoon cream tea. Where are you going by the way? A few different countries or just one?

After your trip to South America, you could look into some volunteering opportunities and projects. Most programs cover everything apart from the flights (of course) and unless you really want to get stuck in and need to do it for your conservation course we wouldn't encourage paying for those volunteer programs. Volunteer your time and skills and not your money.

You're brave to hitchhike from London to Romania. As you said, Sam took the flight when he went - it was easier. We haven't hitchhike as we are weary of the stories you hear about certain incidents. Again, horror stories!
We'll see what Becca's friend thinks of this platform and hopefully we can see him on here soon.
